The comparison to 'castle' is a bit of misdirection. These nuclear shelters do not dominate the area around them, nor would they make an effective defensive platform against a conventional army. Further, their strategic use appears extremely limited because an enemy would be able to control the area around them without actually controlling them, unlike, say, France in the HYW.

Or, at least, that's how I see it.

That would be a good place to set up your own right wing militia camp. You can defend liberty with daddy's shotgun right from your own back yard.

I already know of these places, the government initial sold several for as little as 20,000 dollars. Obsolete standards of protection on em.

Castles where strategically offensive and tactically defensive. The same is true of an ICBM complex. Their missiles are capable of dominating a large area, while the silo exists to protect them. Now if you're more specific then that the comparison becomes much poorer.

Ah, I thought these were merely shelters, not actually launch facilities.

Still, they do possess the capability to enforce their domination of the area without reducing it to radiated ash.

If I recall correctly, without viewing the site yet, I believe one of these old missle silos is used as a a public school.

Do not I assume you mean? These things can't hit anything closer then a few thousand miles away. ICBM complexes did and do have small garrisons though, but only squad or platoon strength in a surface barracks

The complexes in question sort of hybrids, each one has a couple silos along with a hardened launch control complex. But there's not much of any protection for additional personal. Our later missile sites have the silos and control bunkers separated by much larger distances. There are also more missiles per control bunker generally a ten to one ratio. Though there all cross linked, so one bunker can fire every one of the US's ICBM's if the other bunkers have been destroyed.

A silo-bunker was sold in Germany also.

The owner completely turned it into a luxury apartment.
