NJO Questions *Spoilers*

Post by TrekWarsie »

I read Vector Prime (but didn't go far beyond because they killed Chewbacca). I was wondering if they ever explained the Hyperspace disturbance that prevented travel outside of the SW galaxy, and how the Vong managed to get in and what type of FTL drive the Vong have.

The hyperspace disturbance is written off in a speech by Danni Quee in the next book to the Agmar council, she says that while it is common belief that outside the galaxy travel is impossible, this is now clearly false and something along the lines of no research so little knowledge about it.

Basically they say it's an urban legend.

That's how the Vong got in.

As for what they use, their DBs grab gravatitional fields, and pull on them to enter into a near hyperspace equivlent (or hyperspace itself, Traitor said ti was hyperspace but the others said it was what the Vong called darkspace) where they get a maximum speed of about a 3x rating of the standard hyperdrive.

There is no hyperspace disturbance outside of the Galaxy. It was a myth propogated (probably) to help stop people from leaving the Galaxy for others like it, or possibly it simply came to exist because people were afraid to leave the SW Galaxy as they knew it, and the economy within the Galaxy was already more than self-sufficient.

Control issue, the Emperor propagated the rumor, and probably had ships liberally sabotaged that made it known they were leaving the galaxy.

It seems to have existed even prior to the rise of the Emperor, though, and was even accepted as "fact" by most government officials. The "Outbound Flight" project included Jedi for the explicit purpose of using the Force to break through the barrier, so it's safe to say that the rumor existed at least since the earliest days of the Republic (or the Republic would have had evidence of its beginnings, and would have known it to be false).

Possible Spoilers about Vision of the Future

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this is the closest thread related to the Vong. Are the Vong the unknown threat that the Chiss at the Hand of Thrawn were talking about?

Not a chance, their axis of attack is entirely wrong, and they would have to have been active in the Galaxy for a decade or more prior to their arrival.

The Hyperspace disturbance myth is similar to sailors makeing up stories of sea serpents, to discourage travelling into the unknown.
