Good Ol' College...

Post by RogueIce »

I got back from Orientation today, and all I'll say is WOW! I feel in love with at least four of the Student Guides over there! Damn, who knew there could be so many good looking girls? And I suppose it was only because they had to be, but they were all nice and treated me decently! I was shocked and amazed, and now I can't wait for August for the first time I can remember! :D

And the university is quite different than HS. Man, I love that Marshall Center (the USF Student Union), and they got Movies on the Lawn which look like fun, and, well, to this incoming Freshman it is all so overwhelming! They were right about it being quite an experience!

So, anyone know any good Frats to join? 8)

This certainly looks like fun!

College social life is generally better than High School. The maturity level rises and people are generally too concerned with grades and homework to bother treating others like shit. I'm sure you'll find it a refreshing change from high school.

Good luck, man :)

Good luck...and yeah college is a bit better.

Not nearly as clique concerned as High School.

Just watch out for the whole "Ya mean they don't take attendence?" bug.

That and with 30,000 people there, you're less likely to have those damn cliques. :)

hehe They went over that with us. I don't plan on missing class. Not first semester anyway.

Where are you going to school?

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Don't you already have a GF? Or didn't she ditch you at that dance. Did you ever do anything about that?

Not that there's anything wrong with ogling the girls if you've got a gf, of course :D

The chick quality in college was a real eye opener for me, literally. I think I spent my first week just looking around gawking at all the hot chicks, it was great! It was so good that even my dad commented on all the cuties around campus when he dropped me off and helped me move into res. And they were so much nicer too, I found that I could walk up to practically any girl and talk with them without getting smacked or getting the evil eye.

I wish.

She wasn't my girlfriend then, she was just a friend. Which, in retrospect, makes me perhaps understand a bit better about the way things happened at Prom...I don't think I ever made my feelings clear to her before then, and if you think about it, why would she have trouble seeing other friends if I was just one of them?

Doesn't quite put it all back, since I was kinda ignored and got the short end of the stick, but it does at least give me a little perspective.

But hey, college is a whole new beginning, right? And with all these girls, all coming from all over, and me essentially with a clean slate...well, maybe my luck is going to change. After all, is it not starting in college when the girls want the "dependable" guys? :)

My advice to you is make sure not to over extend yourself, especially during your first quarter. Being an engineering student and a midshipman is way more than most at your university probably get into. Take it slow and one step at a time, and you'll be an Ensign in no time.

Pssst! Inside secret, they do choose the guides for "friendly" looks and attitude, wouldn't want to freak out the prospective students now would you? Why else would Princeton choose me to do orientations for 3 years in a row? :D

Poking chicks in the breasts does not work, and usually results in severe groin pain. The "mistaken identity" trick of running up to some random chick and hugging her, then saying "oops! OMG! I thought you were someone else" may work, but it just got me strange looks.

My tip? Just sit down in class next to a hot chick and start talking, or just walk up and say hi to any chick during the many frosh week activities you're bound to have.

And as the wise Rob Wilson once pointed out, Chloroform is your friend. :o

Some advice, as I currently attend USF (may transfer to UCF sometime).

1. Ignore everything you hear about USF being an easy school. USF engineering and science is hard and the teachers will make every effort to kick your ass. If you're taking Physics w/ Calculus, Dr. Lo is the easy teacher, but can't teach. Dr. Chang is a great teacher, but his tests are rather difficult.

2. As USF is a research school, a great many teachers have better things to do then teach. That said, if they have office hours, take advantage of them.

3. Learn the shuttle bus routes.

4. Study. Some classes are easy (especially in humanities), but science and math courses do take some effort.

5. If for some horrid reason you take Organic Chemistry, do every problem in the book and you'll have a decent chance of passing.

The Junior College I went to mostly didn't take attendance.

The University I attended mostly took attendance in one form or another and encorporated your attendance into your class grade. I suppose in some of the giant lecture hall clases that you routinely get in the first few years you could skip but I've always felt that it is much easier to do well in class, even if you don't study/do the reading, if you just show up and pay attention to the lectures. Not that I would recomend skipping the reading or not studying.

I guess the main thing you should remember is that you're paying to be their so you might as well get your money's worth. :)

Speaking of attendance, I once calculated that each hour of my lectures was worth roughly $80 US, which made each lecture worth 160 or 240 bucks. That is quite a staggering sum of money by any standards.

Mmmm...co-ed...living with cute chicks...

But anyways, get into a co-ed dorm, residence, or whatever at any costs. Having members of the opposite sex to mingle with on a daily basis makes things so much better in every way imaginable. Just remember to lock your door at night lest some drunken chick takes a wrong turn and flops down on top of you at 2 in the morning. Woke me up and scared the shit out of me!
