Skeptic Theology 101 (updated!)

Post by Darth Wong »

I'm currently working on a new page for my Creationism site (yes, Hell has frozen over and I'm actually updating that site), which is intended to serve as a brief primer in theology for those who have never studied the Bible.

It's not finished, but you can all preview it at http://www.stardestroyer.net/Creationis ... y101.shtml

Let me know what you think.

I like it. More of the "Moses as a terrorist" argument, I'm always happy to read.

I suppose I should point out that it's not really supposed to make strong arguments against the Bible (that's for the rest of the site), but rather, to simply summarize it.

The lined out "Osama bin Laden" might be a bit over the top. The lined out "The South" is absolutely hilarious. Espescially with repetition.

I think anything that can give quick and simple arguments or starters to arguments is a good thing, not everyone can browse all of talk.origins or the Web for essays on something that may not be relevant.

You should probably include that the Gospels were written differently in order to appeal to different people. You touch on this with the marketing demographic stuff, but it really should be in the summary section you have at the beginning. It would also help people understand why things in the Gospels are sometimes inconsistent.

This sentence at the start of the New Testament section makes no sense:
It is a somewhat Rashomon-like exercise in multiple perspectives of a single series of events, although all of the competing authors are kindred spirits do you don't get the benefit of comparing and contrasting opposing viewpoints.
I assume that "do" should be "so".

Excellent! The only thing I'd change would be including the fact that according to the book of Ecclesiates once you die that's it.

The Iserailites don't triumph in Exodus. They run away.

Oh, and it's designed to piss off egyptians, as in egyptian religion you need a body to enter the afterlife. IOW the message is: "piss off God and he will drown you. And you wouldn't like that would you mr Pharoah?"

A good thing to point out if you wanna talk about the resurrection gospels is how each account gets more fantastic in terms of how late they're believed to be written. Who exactly the women find in the tomb, for example, and the moving of the meeting from Galilee to Jersualem. It's clear building up of a myth. Highly embarassing.

Some mention of books that didn't make it into the Bible might be interesting, too.

NPR recently interviewed (on "Fresh Air") a researcher studying the gospel of Thomas, which seems to have a purpose directly opposed to that of the gospel of John. Thomas makes little of Christ's supposedly divine parentage: Jesus might have been the son of God, but we are all children of God. It downplays the need for acceptance of Christ as "lord and savior" that permeates the modern church establishment.

In other words, it's a gospel that doesn't play well for a developing organization with political aspirations and a need for funding.

It's great but I honestly wouldn't put it up if I were you, since I would bet that this will generate more hate mail/death threats/spam condemning you to hell than any other page on your site.

Nice. I know you've not gotten around to summarising the Epistles, but the impression I got immediately on seeing the blank fields in the form was perhaps that the page authour had fallen asleep while reading them, which explains the blank fields. 8)

A different rendering for the message of Deuteronomy might be: "What's best in life is to obey God: to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women. Or he'll kill you."

The introduction to the Old Testament section has a typo: "Jobs" instead of "Job". It is interesting to note however that the apocryphryal Book of Jobs concerns the story of the little-known prophet who devised a fast and easy-for-the-lay-devotee method for receiving Divine Revelation which was lost when the prophet became trapped behind the Gates of Microhell.

It should also be observed that the Bible (particularly the OT) had an even worse editor than the one assigned to go over Stephen King's books.
