I may have to change my opinion about New York...

Post by MKSheppard »

http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwm ... #Furbearer

In New York State, nearly all species of wildlife are protected. Most species, including endangered species, songbirds, hawks and owls are fully protected and may not be taken. The few unprotected species include 7porcupine, red squirrel, woodchuck, English sparrow, starling, wild pigeon, monk parakeet and snapping turtle. Unprotected species may be taken at any time without limit. A hunting license is required to hunt unprotected wildlife with a bow or firearm
...
Furbearer Hunting:
To hunt furbearers, you need to possess a junior hunting, small game hunting, sportsman, nonresident hunting, or nonresident combination license. A trapping or big game license does not allow you to hunt furbearers. All laws pertaining to the use of a spotlight and firearm apply.

You may hunt red and gray fox, coyote, bobcat, raccoon, skunk, mink, weasel and opossum.
-If you take a coyote or bobcat, it must be tagged and sealed .
-You may use a call, including an electronic call.
-You may hunt furbearers only after sunrise on the opening day. They may be taken at any hour, day or night, for the rest of their hunting season.
-Skunk may be hunted during their open trapping season.
-Mink may be hunted in the Southern Zone with a .22 caliber firearm during their open trapping season. Mink may not be hunted with a firearm in the Northern Zone
-Muskrat may only be hunted on Lake Champlain during the open trapping seasonwith a firearm not larger than a .22 caliber.
-You may hunt furbearers during the day using any handgun, shotgun or rifle. You may hunt at night as described below:

Furbearer Hunting at Night
You may hunt furbearers at night, with or without a light, as follows:

-Use any handgun.
-Use a shotgun loaded with shot (any size).
-Use a rifle chambered in any cartridge, except that you may not possess a centerfire rifle afield, during the day or night, during any open season for deer in areas restricted to using a shotgun only for deer.

If hunting without a light, the use of a light gathering ("starlight") scope is legal on any firearm listed above.

I was going to ask where that pic was from until I got a Pinky & the Brain AMV of Excel Saga. The series is now on my download schedule.

People who are non New Yorkers don't believe me, but travel say 50 miles north of the city and its Deliverance country. Despite the fact that we have a majority of the population of the state and a big chunk of the economy those hicks up north are constantly whining about giving them "Darned city folk" a faior share of the economic and tax pie.
Wherever you go, there you are.

That doesn't surprise me. You can find rednecks up here in Ontario by driving a few hours away from Toronto, particularly if you go southwest toward Michigan.

Is a NY state redneck as bad as an Alabama "good ol' boy?"

Anyway, I find it sad that Shep bases his valuations of entire thriving cities of millions and their diverse, vibrant cultures based solely on his single-minded obsession with guns.

When the state government is controlled pretty much entirely by large metropolitan areas, this is very surprising that this sort of thing is still legal. Heck, here in TN, it is illegal to use artifical lighting of any sort while doing any kind of hunting, other than raccoon.

Maybe because it's because NYC keeps fucking over the rest of the
state by forcing new laws down the throat of the rest of the state?

Uh huh, maybe some people like being crammed into a tiny block of
land with millions of other people, and endless traffic jams, but not
me. I prefer the wide open country, as in an hour or so on I-270
past Frederick, MD.

Ah, politics always boils down to weapons in the end.

I also hear that Cal. is trying to ban the Magnum 500 (quite why you need a .50cal revolver I'll never know), Arnold "I'll be back" Schwarzenegger has said that he opposes the gun too because he know's real guns aren't going to be used for good all the time.

(RE: Baltimore, MD and the rest of Maryland until recently)
How the FUCK does one city force anything down a state's throat? There's thing thing called a state legislature and they force laws down the city's throat. Does NYC already owner of one of the heftiest sales taxes in the country NEED to have it bumped from 8.25 to 8.75%? NO. But the state needs money and if it wasn't for NYC, NYS would be Arkansas v. 1.2. So they come to us when they need tax dollars and revenues but gor forbid we need that money back for education and rebuilding infrastructure.

their land.

I intend to find a plot of land where I shall bury the family pets - they
certainly deserve a lot better than to be uncerimoniously disposed of
or cremated. Now, try and do that in a urban/suburban area, and you'd
be bothered by a lot of assholes waving legalese in your face saying you
can't do that - "Unsanitary disposal of bodies"

Out in the country, nobody gives a shit if you bury Fritz or Scooter, or
whatever in the back forty next to your other pets.

Funny, it's the exact opposite down here in Maryland. Here, Baltimore
until very recently, dominated the state legislature, and got all kinds
of preferential treatment, while the rest of Maryland was told to fuck
off when it came time to dole out the state aid for school funding, etc.

Yes, that's a common trait of loners. Your point?

be bothered by a lot of assholes waving legalese in your face saying you

What difference does it make? Why is it important to let a body rot slowly in the ground and be consumed by worms, maggots and bacteria instead of cleanly cremating it?
Out in the country, nobody gives a shit if you bury Fritz or Scooter, or
whatever in the back forty next to your other pets.
As usual, you produce an odd justifications for your position. I had no idea someone would choose a lifestyle based on local pet burial flexibility.

Maybe it's because I feel that the family pet deserves better than to be
carted off by animal control and disposed of uncerimoniously.

And of course, for the price of 1 shitty townhouse in the "culturally
diverse cities", I can get a massive house with mega-square footage
out in the hicks.

You can have your pet cremated in a ceremony if you want.

Fine, then I'll just move to Australia (Simpsons episode where the kid goes

Every small state with a medium to large city is like that. It's like that here too. About a quarter of the population of Rhode Island lives in Providence...and another quarter lives in the urban residential areas surrounding it. Baltimore gets the lion's share of state tax revenue for the same reason Providence does. When the bulk of the population lives in a single urban core they hold all the power, meanwhile the suburban and rural dwellers fight with each other for the crumbs left over.

New Jersey is so urbanized no single city dominates it, but it's quite aggrivating when laws are passed that benefit the NY metro area of the state at the expense of the rest of us.

Hunting large game. Interestingly that's exactly what it's designed for. Of course the morons trying to pass banns on it don’t understand that no gang member is going to pay a thousand dollars for a huge handgun that they have to dump the moment they used it.

For that matter, the thing is so huge an unwieldy I can't see someone using it in a crime.
