How do you forget?

Post by Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi »

If you do something stupid, or said something dumb that keeps getting stuck in your head, how do you forget about it?

For me, I be optimistic, think of something else, and tell myself it's all in the past and I won't do it again. I doesn't seem to work well, as the bad thoughts keep coming back.

For me I besically don't, though I try to justify it in my head, I don't know why.

Many times this has happened, and I have yet to figure out how to get it out of my head. If someone does, tell me.

While there are many such things...I just don't dwell on em.

Makes forgetting them somewhat easier.

Go watch porn. If you can keep your mind on dumb shit you've done while watching that, then there's something wrong with you.

Fantasize about getting rid of the evidence by killing everyone who witnessed the act of stupidity.

It usually takes me a good few years to forget smallish things, and I dont forget larger ones. No matter what I did, when I did it or how insignificant it was, if it made me feel bad or made someone else feel bad then it takes a long time to forgive myself, and usually is mostly solved by me plucking up the courage to actually directly apologise to the injured party, or if that cant be done, to correct my personality so that it never happens again.

I once caught myself being supremely arrogant and stereotyping, I was so shocked at myself, I have never got even close to being that much of a bastard to anyone since then.

Talk to someone else about it. You won't forget it but once it's out there it kind of helps. If it's something stupid you did, if you can make light of it with a friend it won't bother you as much.

Alcohol abuse and lots of it. In a few years you won't be able to remember shit because your good braincells ran off screaming with your liver close behind.

truthfully there are somethings that will never leave your head. Like one time when i was younger my family had gone out to eat. My little brother and i were making jokes, and said something like "hey instead of Dr pepper how about dr. Pecker" i thought it was pretty funny and when the waitress asked us for our drink order I asked for a Dr. pecker... it was a complete accident, all of my family was looking at me and little brother was laughing his ass off and the waitress was giggling at me. The worst part was that my grandmother was with us. To this day i kick myself.

I fucking remember everything.

Being bullied. Fighting back. Becoming popular. The shame I felt when I caught myself bullying a classmate (and the promise, never more). The first and only time I didn't phone the other day ( I'll carry the shame and regret to my grave). Behaving like a jackass in the first months of college. Straightning up upon realization I could actually fail. Fighting a guy in the Physics lab class (who was insulting me, echoes from the distant past). Punching him into oblivion. He ended up being the best student of the fucking college and one of my best friends. Bar fight, first and only, because of a girl. Finding true love. Losing it. Graduating. Still waiting for something, not know what.

I have my friends, my family and my bike. I'm happy. Sort of.

It certainly takes a while to forget an embaressment. It helps to talk to a trusted friend. Or just write it out in a journal or something, then put it aside.

I forcibly direct my thoughts away from said incident, and think of porn, video games, and porn. Sleep works to.

I dwell on it for a while before my brain does its ritualistic core dump and I forget the stupid event, and occasionally events that surrounded that stupid event, and probably a bit of my childhood memories goes with those things as well...

Basically- my brain does all the work for me.

I quite cheerfully dont think about it. Ive gotten rather good at thinking of something else, and not making any comments at all on it.

When one of my friends or myself makes a stupid mistake, we razz each other incessantly about it. This accomplishes two things in an indirect way:

1) Reminds us we did something stupid, so we won't forget and do it again.

2) Reminds us it can't be that big a deal or we couldn't poke fun at it.

I can honestly say I probably wouldn't have as healthy a perspective on life or myself if it wasn't for friends flipping me shit when I screw up. Hell, that's one of the things I like about this forum -- if I say something stupid somebody will call me on it and I'll learn from the experience.

I'm not getting enough of that at work or school right now and I've noticed it's starting to dull my mental edge. I have finally found a couple of instructors that can see through my bullshit and are happy to kick me in the ass when I'm being a dickhead, thank God.
