Left Behind
Has anyone actually read any of the 'Left Behind' novels?
I had one, looked at the beginning, end, and then sold the book.

Re: Left Behind
I saw the movie at the video rental store, but I couldn't bring myself to spend three dollars to rent it, even for research. That's three dollars which could be spent on something with greater cultural value and better acting, like porn.Kitsune wrote:Has anyone actually read any of the 'Left Behind' novels?

Re: Left Behind
I picked the first book up at Costco a few years ago, honestly thinking it was some sci-fi book. I read that back cover and thought it was something along the line of The Stand. I got in a few chapters before I realized I was reading something about religion and the end of times. I didnt bother to finish. You can tell that Im well versed on Christianity.Kitsune wrote:Has anyone actually read any of the 'Left Behind' novels?

The books are alright, if you ignore most of the Christian propaganda stuff. There is a suprising amount of killing and violence in some of the later ones.

I was given the copy of the book (I think it was the Third book) from a person trying to convert me.TrailerParkJawa wrote: I picked the first book up at Costco a few years ago, honestly thinking it was some sci-fi book. I had 7 at one point. they get increasingly badly written, with the bad guy being more stupid then, say, a local chimpanzee, and the good guys happily quoting the bible as literally millions die by their god.

My mother picked up a bunch of them to dissect.
God, I've never had a bigger laugh in my life. Think of a poorly done Tom Clancy imitation. Throw in Jerry Falwell as the main character, with his view of religion being the "one true" religion. And you get Left Behind.
The movie was ~100 minutes of my life that I really wish I had back. Even a lot of 1980s B-movies were better. It made a lot of people look like complete jackasses, including the military and computer experts. (I wonder how starved Toshiba was for cash if they allowed such blatant advertising in the movie?)

If you wrote a book about a great praiseworthy leader coming to murder all of the Jews and usher in a wondrous Jew-free golden age for humanity, it would be classified as hate literature and would never see the inside of a reputable bookstore. But when you replace "Jews" with "heathens", it's OKSuperman wrote:At least the bookstores appropriately put the stupid "Left Behind" books in the fiction sections...

I originally thought the books might be entertaining but I've always kind of liked "End of the World" type mythology, especially when it's someone's pulled straight fromt the ass interpretation of Revelations.
However, I happened to catch an interview with the authors. The actual writer isn't too bad but there is no way I am giving any money to the religious nut (Lehay?) who is the one behind the ideas in the book. That nut job really believes somethink like that is going to happen. He's basically a fundamentalist preacher and I'm not financing his shooting off his mouth in any way shape or form.
Anyway, people who liked The Stand should try Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon.

Do you mean as a fundamentalist or as a writer?Tsyroc wrote:The actual writer isn't too bad...
As a writer, he could use some lessons in reality. With modern military capabilities, the resistance/whatever would be smacked down faster than they could blink. Well, maybe not that fast, but there is no way they'd be able to pull all the stunts they pulled, even with men on the inside.
And I loved the "untraceable satellite phone" bullshit. If you're putting out enough power to reach a satellite, you can be tracked via simple triangulation...

The scariest part, to me, is that the Left Behind shit gets rented quite often from my video store. People also like the Megiddo Code shit, but not as much.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Does anyone here miss movies like The Omen? Now that was a good look at the end of the world.
