Guys, even if we assume that the UFP has the resources to construct something the size of an ISD, they still don't have the technology to do so.
There's a reason why most UFP ships are a few hundred meters long. Beyond a point, the structural stresses involved in designing a starship become greater than the material strength available. In fact, the CURRENT UFP designs are well beyond that point, requiring SIF fields to even continue to exist. The UFP lacks the technology to design something that much larger than their current starships.
Moreover, the manner in which the UFP constructs starships involves surrounding the future vessel with scafolding. They simply do not have the facilities to construct something of the size that some people are suggesting. Even the cavernous holds of spacedock would not be sufficiently large to hold a future ISD-sized starship (particularly if the design were forced to stick with more conventional ST design, including warp-drives and other odd protrustions).
The fact of the matter is, the UFP simply does not have the resources or the technology to duplicate the Empire's capabilities. They might be able to design "tricks" that could destroy an ISD here or there, but on the whole they could never compete in a slugging match with an ISD.
Could the Federation?......

Of note:
Scaling the hypermatter reactors and plugging it into the formula I believe Saxton used results in a low end ISD total power generation of 2.58E24 watts.
According to the Imperial SB 25% of energy goes to shielding, thus an ISDs shield dissapation rating would be ~ 150 TT/sec
That is what needs to be matched here.

Erm, The Romulan Empire's Warbirds are over 1 kilometre in length. It has a warp drive. Federation tech is at the same level as Romulan tech.Guys, even if we assume that the UFP has the resources to construct something the size of an ISD, they still don't have the technology to do so.

Of course they can build something bigger than they have.
Voyager summed up in 1 quote:
Neelix: These people dont appreciate what they have! This ship is the match of anything in a hundred lightyears, yet what do they do with it?
(fake voice) Oh, well lets go find some space anomaly today that'll rip it apart!

Demonstrate that the Romulans can achieve this by something other than clever application of SIFs. I seem to remember the Scimitar (the biggest, baddest, most sophisticated Romulan ship ever built) crumpling like a cheap tent when the Enterprise rammed it at highway speeds. (The Enterprise suffered a lot less damage from the ramming attack than the Scimitar did, and both rely heavily on SIFs.)TurboPhaser wrote:Erm, The Romulan Empire's Warbirds are over 1 kilometre in length. A Warbird might be really big, but most of it is hollow space which serves no purpose but make the ship bigger. Warbirds are actually a bit too large for its own good, because they are built to intimidate.TurboPhaser wrote:

A warbird has nowhere NEAR the volume of an ISD, due to its massive central maw and unusual design principles. UFP starships that have been designed are all of smaller volume and overall size, but not THAT much smaller. When people are sitting here discussing starships that are dozens or even hundreds of kilometers long, with a volume several times greater than that of an ISD, I highly doubt that the UFP could construct such a vessel even if they tried to.TurboPhaser wrote:Erm, The Romulan Empire's Warbirds are over 1 kilometre in length.
