I owe you an apology Hethir. Sorry.

But, call me crazy if you like, but I buy DVDs for the film[/iu] on them, not the special features. Sure, if there's an option between a cheap DVD with no special features and an expensive one with mre, I'll buy the special edition, and I'll watch thespeical features, but I'm quite happy with my Batman DVDs, which were only £10, and all you get is the movie. In fact, I own two DVDs which have a separate discs worth of special features, and I don't mind.

The reason I buy DVDs over videos is because they're better quality, last longer, and when my current VCR breaks down (which won't be for a while, because it's not a year old yet) I almost certainly won't replace it with another VCR, so I hve to transfer my vid collection to DVD anyway.the only special feature I want is chapter selection, and every one has that anyway (even the ones my parents record of the telly)

Hey, no probs. I can see how ambiguous my post was. On the same line of rant, is that they release the DVD with no extras, then release it 6 months later with heaps. :X

My first choice is high quality as well. If you buy a superbit DVD, they explain why having many features on one DVD is a bad thing. I notice that on some of my DVDs, if I watch the trailor for the same movie in the special features, its sometimes sharper than the movie itself (ie. the movie quality has been reduced to fit everything on the DVD)!

I pretty much ignored the Superbit format for quite a while, until I picked up a used "Panic Room" at the local videostore. They have "Das Boots" spanning two DVDs, and it sure looks sweet. Once you've had Superbit you don't want to go back!

The usefulness of SuperBit depends on the nature of the film. Some movies compress very well with MPEG-2, while others don't. If a movie does not compress well, you sort of need the whole 9GB to get good quality.

Filmmaking decisions such as the deliberate use of a grainy picture make the bitrate requirement skyrocket, as can a lot of camera movement. In contrast, moving people or objects against a stationary backdrop are an ideal situation for MPEG-2.

I'm a little way into Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I think people will be pleased with the improvement in the menus. They ditched most of that animated junk and you get to the menus rather quickly. The menus themselves are only so-so and so far the set doesn't seem to have much in the way of "extras". I assume that we'll get a commentary for "Hush" but so far the only thing I've seen is the script for one of the first 8 episodes (I'm only on the second disk).

My brother bought Die another Day on DVD. It's a bitch to get to the opening menu. You have to sit through this masturbatory MGM ad. I mean, for fuck's sake! We bought the fucking movie. You have my money! Let me watch it in peace!

What I hate most with DVDs are two things.

One, I hate those snap close cardboard DVD cases. They are freaking annoying and are mishapped compared to standard DVD cases.

Two, I really hate the DVDs that come with their own movie playing software that automaticaly upload and try to make you play the instant the movie is inserted into the drive.

On a side note, I just can't stand the movies that place all sorts of crap infront that you can't fastforward through. This includes advertisements, producing company logos, and that fucking stupid FBI warning. We already know all this crap and we just want to watch the movie. What next, fucking soda comercials infront of the DVD?

Lucky bastard.

Yeah still sold, and still makes me think how fucking cheap they are.

My complaints are pretty much the same

1. Have to watch pointless things like the FBI warning(though I did like Fight Clubs joke on it)

2. Pointless previews I CAN'T skip.

For the most part menus don't bother me too much but can get annoying.

Um, what about people with widescreen TVs? If the subtitles are in the bands, then those people won't be able to see the subs at all.

DVDs that don't play in MPlayer. Other than bad transfers, bad cases and double-dipping, MPlayer solves pretty much all the problems you guys've mentioned, since you can just play the movie directly from the command line instead of having to wait through the warnings/menus/ads that preceed the movie. Not having to reboot to play DVDs is also nice.

And to the people complaining about DVDs that install stuff as soon as you put the disc in the drive, why the hell do you still have Auto Insert Notification enabled? Whenever I install Windows, the first thing I do is disable that useless "feature." Well, sometimes it's the second thing I do after disabling the hiding of file extensions.
