No, I'm talking about his talks on phallic symbols.SyntaxVorlon wrote:Freud wasn't that well endowed, though I'm sure he got some grants along the way.Darth Gojira wrote:Somewhere out there, Freud is grinning.

I sympathize, pal. There's nothing like having somebody in an oversized cowboy hat and pink leather chaps screaming, "Why doesn't anyone take me seriously?!" to make one's whole demographic (whatever it might be) look bad.BrYaN19kc wrote:This sort of embarrassing crap is exactly why Matt and I were out of town during gay pride this year. IMO, many of the more flamboyant participants in the parades aren't looking for acceptance of their right to live as they choose (which is a reasonable and just cause), they want everyone to approve and applaud everything they do, which is unreasonable and selfish.
The way I see it, I don't have any right nor any reason to expect or demand that other people like me and celebrate everything I do, just that they let me do it in peace unless I'm causing them harm.
By contrast, there was a Gay and Lesbian Association on my college campus that just did low-key fun stuff like open potlucks where they could just be themselves and encourage everyone else to join them in doing the same. If you want to talk about encouraging acceptance, forget parades: offer college students free food and they'll love you even when you're clubbing baby seals with the corpses of children kidnapped from the local orphanage.

In Denmark, there's a similar controversy about an amusement park where a vendor is selling penis-shaped candy. (no, I'm not joking!)
Psychologists, politicians and other social commentators have equated this with child pornography. The people who produce the phallic candy say they don't mean it seriously.

Maybe I lucked out being in Houston, as our parade is THIS weekend coming up. I must say that most of our parade participants were rather subdude last year. I am a member of a gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered country western dance group (The Rainbow Ranglers Dance Club). We have done quite a bit of exhibition dancing (all with our clothes ON), and we have put on a performance in the parade every year for the past three that I have been a member.
That having been said, I do agree that actions such as described in articles linked to this discussion are NOT banner moments for gay society. I don't believe we should have to "assimilate" to have civil rights, and I think for a heterosexual, 75% of whom either divorce, commit adultery, or both, to judge a group of society by the actions of a parade, is pretty damn hypocritical. No, I am not defending vulgar and sexually suggestive behavior by anyone, however, I do understand the history behind it.
I believe this is truly a matter of "Let them who are without sin cast the first stone." I will go on record as saying that I think the leather dudes with their bare-assed chaps really ought to leave the outfits at home. It is one thing to be an open and feel comfortable about your sexuality, it is another to make a flagrant display of one's sexual proclivities.

It is one thing tobe gay...But the giant spectacles that some people call Pride Parades are downrght obscene....A parade is on thing, but walking naked down the street with a giant penis...it just makes us loose support.
