I am not a trekkie, I am hard-core SW debator and I found the behaviour prior to this to be offensive even to me.Eleas wrote:And you, Aly, care too much about this debate on an emotional level to see what it truly is. Penis envy.
Nobody debates this subject to befriend their opponents. It's a hobby, and you're treating it as some sort of sacred mission. I have to say it's almost as disturbing as when Kynes put up RSA's stats on the net.
I'm not saying you're acting like an asshole or anything, cause you're not. But you're missing the fun part. You're investing too much emotion into what is no more than a silly little game. And that, I think, is just a recipy for disaster.

About this whole politeness issue...
The roughness is a ASVS tradition. We generally have very few incomers. I don't think we had one that lasted for the entire year of 2002.
Anyway, Kynes would call this (paraphrased):
We (pro-SW side) win because:
1) We smash arguments before they have a chance to form up.
2) We keep ourselves well-aware of basic arguments (like the laser-myth.)
3) We have advanced alliances so we can respond efficiently to even advanced threats.
4) We are better organized, better trained, with better arguments.
Read: the SW side is organized like a military unit. Kynes even puts in the rules that other boards fear ASVS in Rule 12 of the Rules of Engagement
Alyeska, I know you don't like Kynes. His reputation in SB obviously isn't that good. On the other hand, it is apparent he has a pretty good rep in ASVS (he IS the maintainer of the FAQ, and apparently still is even if he's not around anymore.) AFAIK, whatever you might read into his messages, Kynes is aggressive, but he's honest, and in ASVS, aggressiveness seems to be a virtue, not a sin - for good or for bad.
This attitude prevailed in ASVS to some extent. That means every time a newbie Trekkie appears (misinformed or just an ass) we immediately execute all these moves. An ALLIANCE of pro-SW debaters immediately sets the hapless (or just idiotic) Trekkie straight with ASVS-grade flamethrowers. Generally, the Trekkie leaves whining how mean we are.
Our theory back then was pretty much: If you really got the guts and brains, you'd take the ASVS style of hard gut punching, prevail and stay.
But soon it just didn't work. I sometimes felt a bit torn (I kind of noticed we had very few newcomers, but I was concerned with the quality on the board.) I generally wound up pouncing on the incomers if I took a stance at all - trying to maintain the quality.
Soon, we had very few Trekkies, because too few make the harsh cut that is ASVS. We might be the Delta Force and SAS combined in the debate world, but too few meet ASVS fitness standards.
So it really depends. If we want a few, tough, elite core of Trekkies as our opponents, then... we do this ASVS style and see how many we get. If not, perhaps a more conciliatory posture is called for, at least for the first post

Ah, one of many 'gems' in that debate.

Actually, we all freaked them out.Ender wrote:Damn Kaz, you freaked them out.
Personally, I still amaze myself with my good fortune. I made the mistake of not lurking, but Kynes guides me onto the road. I also had the amazing fortune of actually bumping into www.stardestroyer.net, so at least I had some basics before running into ASVS, which happens to have a bunch of people with more or less similar thoughts.
I can't even imagine what would happen if I bumped into say Kennedy's site first and then into ASVS. Probably crisply roasted at least.
Or if I read Wong's site and ran hard into SB. At the very least I'd have met a lot of opposition from E1701 and the like. At worst...

You mean making it an animated gif? I had a program for that, once, but I don't know what happened to it.Darth Servo wrote:What do you think? Now if someone could just tell me how to do those ones that switch pictures automatically.
