How to become a real-life Sith Lord
We all know which real-life religions the Jedi Order's philosophy are based upon. (Largely Taoism and Zen Buddhism, with a bit of Christianity thrown in)
But what about the philosophy of the Sith?? From which real-life movements and religions did Lucas and the EU writers draw their inspiration for the Sith??
What I know is that the word "Sith" might be derived from Seth, which was the name of an Egyptian god associated with chaos, destruction, untamed nature and the desert. Some historians also see him as a "paraforce" to the more lawful and constructive gods of the Egyptian pantheon - hmm.... am I seeing a pattern??

IMO it's just co-incidence.

Good point -- a sith lord would likely cower before an evil lawyer...Montcalm wrote:They don`t need laser sword when they can manipulate laws they`ve created.
Evil Lawyer: "I shall smite thee henceforth with my great and terrible lawsui..."
Sith Lord: "Ghaaa, it is too much! I am bested! How shall I serve thee?"
Evil Lawyer lets out evil laughter that chills the bones of demons...

Actually, in the early drafts of the first movie, the Dark Side of the Force was known sometimes as the Bogan, and sometimes as the paraforce. Might not be as much of a conincidence as you think.

Well, in the early drafts, the Jedi Knights were called the Jedi Bendu, the Sith Lords were called the Sith Knights, the Force was called the Force of Others, the Light Side was called the Ashla, and the Dark Side was called the Paraforce or Bogan. Do any of those terms have meaning to any of you?
Oh, and in a couple of drafts the plot revolved around an artifact called the Kimber crystal. Any significance there?

The Sith seems a bit inspired by Indian Thugee cults.

What are the similarities?? I don't know much about the Thugee cults, but IIRC they were a religious sect of highwaymen who strangled their victims in the name of Kali, the goddess of death.CaptainChewbacca wrote:The Sith seems a bit inspired by Indian Thugee cults.

Well, the first 4 letters of "Bendu" part might refer to Saint BENeDictUs. And "Ashla" is a direct reference to Aslan from Chronicles Of Narnia.Drooling Iguana wrote:Well, in the early drafts, the Jedi Knights were called the Jedi Bendu, the Sith Lords were called the Sith Knights, the Force was called the Force of Others, the Light Side was called the Ashla, and the Dark Side was called the Paraforce or Bogan. However, I don't know what Bogan means... however, if you swap the wovels and switch the B for a D, you get the name of a Philistine deity whose clerics opposed the ancient Hebrews. (and later was identified with some really scary stuff by a certain H.P. Lovecraft)
Still, that Bogan=Dagon thing is probably coincidence.

Dagon was a real mythological figure, but it was the god of the field and I guess the harvest for the Babylonians, I don't know if they were related to the philistines, but I don't think Bogan was used by Lovecraft.Simon H.Johansen wrote:Well, the first 4 letters of "Bendu" part might refer to Saint BENeDictUs.
