Gladiator

Post by Joe »

I just watched this again the other day and was reminded how great it is. Later on I heard some guy rambling about how stupid it was and how it shouldn't have gotten the Oscar.

Why do people like to knock Gladiator so much? Sorry if this has been done before.

I personally don't like it that much, to tell you the truth.

I don't really get the dislike either, I thought it was brilliant myself.

I like it but I can see where the Best Picture Oscar may have been pushing things a bit. I just assume it's one of those Karma things to make up for movies like Chicago and Shakespeare In Love winning. :?

It's violent, and it's a blockbuster. Those are both black marks in a typical critic's book, so they went into the theatre with a preconception, just LOOKING for excuses to attack it rather than simply watching the movie.

It's also a man's movie, and whether critics admit it or not, they derive a perverse sense of superiority from disliking anything that Joe Sixpack likes, particularly if it isn't sufficiently original for them.

Oh no, a vengeance theme! We've seen this before, so the movie sucks!
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.

I think it is just a movie that was well done. Ridley Scott sold his soul to make Blade Runner and since then just did not great stuff even if he is very careful.
It is odd, Because Crowe is a good actor, but he did very little in Gladiator...and the story is just nothing and the History much less...The emperor had the mindset of a Dragon Ball Z villain...

The big deal is the really awesome Rome...I think that is all and could have lasted 15 minutes then...

Well, I hate to be in the minority opinion with you people, but I really didn't enjoy the movie. I can't exactly put my finger on why this is just yet, but needless to say I haven't been able to sit back and watch the whole movie through with interest.

I felt it was a decent movie, I didnt love it like my guy buddies. I kinda wish there was some gratuitous orgies or roman bath scenes. The sister of the emperor was so incredibly hot.

If its on cable I will watch it, but I wouldnt buy the DVD like I would for 5th Element.

It was pretty good, but its not the sort of thing I'd buy

Orgy scenes would have that, but you ignore the basic point, there are other people and they aren't related in RL anyway. That I know of.

You can see Connie Nielsen naked in The Devil's Advocate (and she looks as good naked as you'd imagine).

I didn't find it to be that interesting, it was a little boring at times, wasn't violent enough, and I don't like how it was edited.

And gratuitous nudity and sex would have just padded the film even more than it already was with what it had.

The movie just bored me, and the response that the movie got fertilized that boredom until it blossomed into a firery rose of hate.

Frankly, I'm a little awe-struck that people don't like it more. Everything about the movie was fucking good! The only thing I would change would be to add in some of the cut scenes that help to show the black hole of humanity Commodus had become....

Yeah, I would have added in the cut scene where he orders the death of the two Praetorians. Then, when Quintus orders the Praetorians to sheath their swords during the final fight, and they obey, it would have been more obvious why.

The ending was fucking horrible. I'm sorry, but no Roman emperor in his right mind would have gotten into a sword fight with a gladiator. Even the insane ones knew better than to fuck around with gladiators.

And how many of the insane ones did have personal grudges with said gladiator, and had openly defied by him before?

I found the fight fully in line with Commodus' personality. Appear to be honorable and valiant, but rig the fight so there's no actual danger.
And lets face it, in the real world it would have worked.

I found the movie brilliant. The end damn near makes me cry, every time.

'Is Rome worth one good man's life?
We believed it once. Make us believe it again.
He was a soldier of Rome.Honor him.'

*sniff*
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

The movie was ok... I really thought that CT/HD should of won for best Picture. Gladiator just reminded me of braveheart to much. Guy who has loved one die, goes up against an evil king who killed loved one, finds love in another woman, both king and hero die in the end.

I just think the emperor wouldn't have bothered with fighting Maximus himself. He had multiple ways of gruesome public execution he could have utilized instead. I strongly disagree that the fight would have been inline with Commodus's personality. Commodus did not like the taste of battle one bit, and went to great lengths to avoid it.
