Re: Homeschooling
Since I personally know of no homeschool failures, I support it. One girl with whom I grew up is now a practicing attorney, and she was homeschooled...HemlockGrey wrote:Are you for or against?

In an ideal ernviromeny, it would be a bad idea, but sence that is rare in the US, homeschooling should be kept as an option.

I have extremely mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it's the parent's decision, first and foremost. On the other, it doesn't really give children enough exposure to the real world. I think if a parent wants to homeschool his/her child, he needs to make sure that the child receives exposure and insight on the world from elsewhere and socialization with other children.

It depends on the homeschooler's parents, doesn't it? Let's put it this way: while not all homeschoolers are going to be sheltered from reality by their parents, people who wish to shelter their kids from reality WILL use homeschooling to do it.Prince-Admiral Krennel wrote:For it, all this "homeschoolers are socially stunted and never see the real world" stuff is total bullshit.

Homeschooling, when performed by educated parents, and held to the same standard as a public school, and when done for the right easons...can be great.
But, that IMHO is rarely done that way. Often n the US homeschooling is done to suppress ideas, not encourage them(think fundie homeschool) and is often done by underqualified parents, with little oversight.

Let me tell you about my friend Jarred. I met this guy Jarred while I was in high school. He was a friend of a friend. His parents and family were/are fundies, so they kept him home to shelter him from reality. Now, he started hanging around my friends and he was a total weirdo. I say weirdo as in he didn't understand that guys wrestle and hit each other because they're buddies. Anyway, one day we finally convinced him to try a beer. That was the beginning of his downward spiral. He turned into a party machine. He ended up in the emergency room twice for alcohol poisoning within the next six months.
Where is he now? He got a girl pregnant and married her because he thinks it is the right thing to do. Last time I saw him he was a complete bitter jerk. He makes 9 dollars per hour with his cool phone company job.
While I cannot say that home schooling caused his problems in life, I can say that it sure as hell did not help him interract with people. He told us numerous times that his only social outlet while growing up was church functions.

I've got eight success stories involving no pregnacies (outside of intended ones within marriage) who were homeschooled, and one is a lawyer, another two are college grads (all with high GPAs), and all others are still being homeschooled.Superman wrote: While I cannot say that home schooling caused his problems in life, I can say that it sure as hell did not help him interract with people. That's actually somewhat of a misconception. Homeschooled children gather in large groups from time-to-time (weekly I believe, but depends on the groups) in order to provide such interaction. They even set up major events like proms and other such functions.Superman wrote:Oh, I am sure that homeschooling is fine when used correctly. I am just saying that, for many kids, social interraction is largely learned in a classroom, on the playground, playing team sports, etc. Home schooling can only offer so much.
Edit: I speak from what I know of friends who were homeschooled -- of course, others may do things differently...

Depends on the local schools. Overall I'd say its something to be avoided unless the local option is pretty bad.

You're probably right, however many people take the entire homeschooled group ( all 1+ million) of them and put them into a category of the socially inept. Sure there are many homeschoolers like this, and there are probably just as many children in schools that are just as incapable of socializing with their peer group. However, to say that homeschooling has caused this person to be unable to socialize with other is false staement.
Agreed. The kid will either socialize or he won't.Prince-Admiral Krennel wrote:For it, all this "homeschoolers are socially stunted and never see the real world" stuff is total bullshit.

I was homeschooled when I was younger and we had approx. 50-60 kids that met at one of the local colleges during the summer for swimming lessons. Of all of those kids, the vast majority are now in college or have finished college.
I know I won't earn any brownie points for this, but you can be completely, utterly, and hopelessly miseducated about evolutionary biology and still be relatively knowledgable in other fields of academics, as well as in some of the other sciences. So if fundie parents choose not to educate their children about proper evolutionary theory, it's not the end of the world for the child.

Another interesting point: the founder of the American homeschooling movement was none other than Rousas John Rushdoony. Anything else he pioneered? Why, of course, the idea of Christian Reconstructionism, aka theonomy. He's prtetty much the scariest fundie of them all.
This pretty much explains the purpose of the homeschooling movement.
Have a very nice day.

I'm generally against homeschooling. It can work out well for some people, but I think it should be considered only if the local schools well and truly blow.

So? Margaret Sanger was a eugenecist, that doesn't mean the purpose of Planned Parenthood is eugenics.fgalkin wrote:Another interesting point: the founder of the American homeschooling movement was none other than Rousas John Rushdoony. Yes, however the fact reamins, that in some areas of the US, homeschooling is used exactly for that purpose.Durran Korr wrote:So? What does THAT have to do with homeschooling???

Personally, I am neither for nor against. I was actually homeschooled during 1st grade, but I was educated in public school from 2nd grade and onwards. Even though I only was homeschooled for one year, it had its effects: Academically speaking, I had a tendency to perform much better than my peers, but my social skills have been somewhat substandard. However, during junior high I gradually became more normal. (although I'm still more or less different from the rest)
I've never known other homeschooled people than myself, so I can't draw any conclusions.
