Coat of arms advisory

Post by Galvatron »

"Except for a few individual exceptions from some parts of Eastern Europe, there is no such thing as a coat of arms for a surname - despite the claims and implications of some companies to the contrary. Coats of arms are granted to individuals, not families or surnames. A form of property, coats of arms may rightfully be used only by the uninterrupted male line descendants of the person to whom the coat of arms was originally granted. Such grants were (and are) made by the proper heraldic authority for the country in question."

You might be right there, but there is a crest for my family, two actually, one is of a Bull with the motto "Hold Fast" and the Lewis offshoot of the family has a symbol of a sun with the motto "We Shine, Not Burn."

In number of stiuations, I'm sure this is true. In my experience, a lot of people simply look up a coat-of-arms bearing the same surname as theirs, and assume it's one of their direct ancestors or belongs to their family line.

My family's got it's coat-of-arms hanging up in our house. It's at least the one used by our family's noble house around the 14th century in northern France, iirc. Ahh, d'Armand de Chateauveiux...

Damn, the world's just not the same without feudalism. What I wouldn't give to have this whole town under my thumb, and a whole entourage of peasants with names based on the jobs they do, like Baker, Miller, Fluffer, and Smith and all that stuff. As soon as the nukes drop and this country's in ruin, half of everything you make will start going to my manor. :P

The one I posted isn't for a surname, but a clan. Now, that could be usurped from the clan chieftan, the Earl of Balcarres and Crawford, but I think the crest sticks.

Bah, even nobility can make late-night typos every now and then. You all are just jealous because your ancestors were proles. Now go clean my boots, or no cake for you. :P

My ancestors may have been humble Polish and German peasants, but at least they weren't French. :P

Note: I actually do like France, the French, their culture, and some of their food. It's just that you set me up for a French joke, and I couldn't help but follow through.

Well, that's a bummer.

I'll look into my English side of ancestry, one was like a Lord or something.

Really? I sure don't. Screwy modern country, and an awful language on the ears. I just take power and prestige when I'm given it.

At least I know my family doesn't have a coat of arms. Unlike those who find several coats of arms for their surname and can't decide which to use...

BTW, I've found a coat of arms for Johnson, which is the anglicized version of Johansen.

Still, I'm not sure whether the Johnson family bearing those arms actually has a connection to mine. But let's ponder that later!

Setzer orders his soldiers to fire arrows, making the upstart peasant the spitting image of St. Sebastian.
