Interesting discussion.
Personally, I can't see Kynes as a troll. But I can see how he got under your skin.

Kynes hasn't been posting in general at all. I talk to him over AIM and got him to post once on ASVS a week or so ago, but he's effectively retired and focusing on other things.

Yeah, the most contact I've had with him is periodic AIM chats about the newsgroup stat program.

Warsies...
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the late, great Plain & Simple Cronan. I'm not sure if he meets the specifics of a Warsie, exactly, but he *did* very ably eviscerate TJ back in the days when ASVS was in its infancy and the versus debate was a messy crosspost across several Trek/Wars NGs.
I'd have added a twerp who went by the moniker 'Rush Limbaugh' to the list of Warsie trolls. This guy was a nut and were there an afterlife, it would be poetic justice for him and TJ to end up in the same small room arguing this topic for eternity.
As far as trolls go, though, I'd still say TJ ranks supreme in the Trekkie pantheon. I once had the unfortunate experience to track down many of his very old NG postings (again, pre-ASVS) and the guy had a pretty visceral loathing of all things Star Wars.

I'm suprise no one mentioned ole Gothmog. He was a real card, that one. One time, he tried to argue the "lasers of any power would not work on Federation shields" once. I argued with him until his position was "lasers will not penetrate Federation shields unless they have sufficent power, then they will" at which point, he claimed it was his position all along.
Also, it was funny how all the Trekkies at SB though he was going to humble Mike and then when he turned out to be a dud, he largely disappeared from the debating arena.

Bah, back in my day (early 2000 to late 2001) we encountered a vast number of trolls and valiant debaters who'd lay their lives down for their chosen sci-fi franchise.Gandalf wrote:We're fighting the peace now.Admiral Valdemar wrote:Ah memories, reminds me of when I used to versus debate all the time ages ago.

We used to enjoy a good troll bashing as much as the next slightly psychologically unstable versus debater, we also loved Galaxy Vs. ISD and Stormtrooper Versus Red Shirt threads.
Boy, if only I had a time machine. I'd go back in time to those memorable days and choke myself with the mouse cord to make it stop.

You know what? I posted a reply to that message on Dec. 6, 2000 asking for proof that he said that he would lie, and I'm still waiting for that quote. You'd think that such a quote would materialize after nearly three years if it actually existed.Alyeska wrote:What makes him a troll is that he actively encourages lying to win a debate as well as deceit and false quoting.
