What the Iran student protests were about: privatization

Post by Vympel »

Hmm
Minister of Science and Technology unveiled a plan to privatize universities requiring the students to pay tuition fees causing dismay among the students who could not afford to.

The Constitution has envisaged free education for the public and the government is responsible for running the administration of universities and provide fund for them in addition to benefits for the students.

This is from a state-run media outlet, or so I infer from the article.

I would have to be skeptical about anything they say about the motives of the protesters. In fact, the article makes them look bad, which is exactly what one would expect the pro-government propganda to issue.

No I heard the same thing from the BBC, although they also emphasised how unhappy the students were with the lack of reform, and they still remember how one of their lecturers was sentenced to death for blasphemy, which was over-turned due to huge student protests.
