Wonderful. For years they have supposedly watched the region for this kind of thing, and the best they can come up with is this?
It [JI] was not on our radar screen as a terrorist organisation before December 2001 and combined with the differences within Indonesia about JI, there was insufficient time before Bali to do what might have been able to be done if JI had been identified a year or two earlier as a terrorist threat," he said.
So what have they been doing all this time? Makes me wonder what other organisations have been 'glossed over' like this. Kinda pointless having a Intelligence agency which did squat to at least observe possible threats to australia.

BTW anyone got any data on how long Jamah Islamiah has been around? Be interesting to know how long ASIO ignored this.

I never hear of JI until after Bali, and I like to consider myself as someone who is aware of the world...

Neither had I. But you'd think our intelligence service would have. I just cant believe they just dismissed any reports they had about JI. Surely they must have known something was going on? Im not advocating it was a conspiracy of silence, more a case of being to assured that australians wouldnt be a target of terrorism.

I just want to know if Downer knew, and didn't issue a travle warning to Aussies, not that listen to that prick, but I am sure a lot of people would have thought twice about it.

Time to start up resorts in East Timor, at least they love us there.

If he did then he should be removed from office. Blatent disregard for that kind of thing smacks of true incompetancy of the worst kind. I think the worst thing is that the best the Libs can come up with as a defence is try and make it seem like its a Labor ploy to discredit the Govt for political gain.

Perhaps just for once one of our political parties is trying to do something not just for the political credit, but actually to show the public the depth of the inaction of Howards cretins

That's actually a very good idea, it'd do wonders for their economy. It could be like Cuba before communism.

Hmmm, I have been thinking about it for a while, I will definetly be keeping a close eye on it. I want to go and visit at the end of the year and see which would be the 'choice' places :D

A lot of government spending would go so much better in my pocket. I would help the children and old people. No really i would.

I doubt you can do much worse with it than the "Powers That Be" that are already in charge... But then that's pretty much my stock response where "Government" and "Spending" is used in the same sentence.

Isn't that an oxymoron? Or do you need to use the any of the following words in that sentence; 'intelligent', 'usefull', 'correct' etc?
