Mel Gibson, Jesus Christ, Catholic Church and Hypocrisy
I was reading an article in the paper last night about controversy surrounding Mel Gibson's Christ movie. For the benefit of those who haven't heard about it, essentially Mel is making a movie about the passion of Christ (events leading up to and including the crucifixion) and it will be in Aramaic and Latin (NO SUBTITLES, what an ass, one thing is being artisitic another is just being plain stupid, only Latin scholars will get this movie, this has blockbuster written all over it )
Seems that Jewish and Catholic groups are up in arms after getting some excerpts from the script. The Jews are pissed because they say the movie portrays them in a negative light. Mel wants to follow the gospels as closely as possible in this depiction and the gospels are pretty harsh on the Jewish community, as Mel put it, "He was not recognized and cast out by his own"
The Jewish groups are insisting that this will dredge up horrible stereotypes.
The Catholics are stating the same position, seems the Cathloic church has decided fuck the gospels let's hop on the PC bandwagon. Its like they are ashamed of how the gospels portray Jews but will latch on to these same scriptures to attack - Gays, Atheists, Muslims, and other undesirables. But since they have an alliance with the Jewish religious community let's start sweeping that embarassing shit under the rug.
Mel Gibson is not innocent either, while much of this is guilt by association it does make food for thought. Seems Mel's dad was a foudner of a movement that denied the neccessity of Vatican II and were sort of fundie Catholics. They also denied the Holocaust and other typically virulent antisemetic thought that pervaded the Church for centuries and which the church tried to deal with in Vatican II and which we see now in their defense of the Jewish view that the passion of Christ needs to be toned down a bit nowadays.
So does the son share the father's views...Mel denies it, but is known to be a strict Catholic, does not use birth control, hence the gaggle of kids he has, and now this movie, it makes you wonder.
Anyway, this had me thinking alot last night, particulalrly about the hypocrisy on all sides regarding the passion of Christ. Any thoughts?

Over the years the Gospels have probably been written and re-written so many times that I don't believe much of what was said in them.
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"
- A.B. Original, Report to the Mist
"I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

Sorry, I'm still hung up on the mind-boggling stupidity of making a movie entirely in Aramaic and Latin.

You shouldn't have mentione that caveat, it's far more amusing than this storm in a teacup.Stravo wrote:Bastards, I spend minutes writing that all out expecting some deep thoughts and you're focussing on a peripheral issue. Curse you all!!!
They're hypocrites and funides. That's my thoughts.
People will look upon this film as the height of Mel Gibson's arrogance.

Yeah, they'll probably get painted as the Forces of Evil. I can't wait to see the scene when the Jews choose that other guy (keep forgetting his name) over him.The Jews are pissed because they say the movie portrays them in a negative light. Mel wants to follow the gospels as closely as possible in this depiction and the gospels are pretty harsh on the Jewish community, as Mel put it, "He was not recognized and cast out by his own"
The Catholic Church's entire history has been defined by who they can latch onto. Huns, Lombards, Germans, and the French have all had a turn with the Bishop. Not suprising they'd latch onto the Jews now because of WW2.The Catholics are stating the same position, seems the Cathloic church has decided fuck the gospels let's hop on the PC bandwagon. Again, I'm sure scenes with a large number of Jews will be...interesting.Mel Gibson is not innocent either, while much of this is guilt by association it does make food for thought. Seems Mel's dad was a foudner of a movement that denied the neccessity of Vatican II and were sort of fundie Catholics. This will be a great movie to mercilessly torment? So does the son share the father's views...Mel denies it, but is known to be a strict Catholic, does not use birth control, hence the gaggle of kids he has, and now this movie, it makes you wonder.

What did Fast and Furious do?Axis Kast wrote:As a Jew, I'm a bit worried.
I don't think this will cause a Night of the Long Knives.
But like The Fast and The Furious, we could see some short-term incidents as a result. I certainly hope people won't think this is some kind of realistic history.

The movie Fight Clubhad some unforseen consequences too- basically- a whole bunch of stupid fuckers missing the point of the film entirely and going out and trying to emulate the fight clubs.

If Mel Gibson didn't run the company that's backing the film you can bet he would be putting subtitles into that movie.

I resent that. Actually if Pilate had not caved to the pressure of some zealot holy men Christ would not have been crucified and most likely the cult of Mithras would be worshipped today. When you know that an actor's father is a virulent anti-semitic Holocaust denier, this gives you an idea of the sort of indoctrination he received while growing up.
And when the actor is silent on his feelings about this, it certainly makes one wonder, doesn't it? Unless Mel Gibson has given a frank and clearly resounding repudiation of his father's beliefs, I am inclined to think that there are some skeletons in his closet.

He's got every right to make this movie. Big fucking deal. I may not agree with him, but that doesn't really matter.

And hey, if he is making a literal biblical movie then it's a no-brainer that the Jews will come off as the bad guys. That doesn't necessarily mean too much, except that Mel Gibson takes the bible a little too literally.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
