Every where I've lived people call it Pop(at least as far as I recall...I could be mistaken). And I've lived in Ontario, New Brunswick, and BC...so I wouldn't be surprised if most people from Canada call it pop.

Also...

Just wondering if you've read this article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3006486.stm recently....or if it's a coincidence.

Huh. Accursed regional idiosyncracies.

I've heard the word "pop" a lot also. I've also heard lots of people call them "soft drinks" as well (including myself). IMHO: People that frequently drink “pop/soda/softdrinks” often call them by a slang term, just like people that go to McDonald's a lot might call it "Mikee Dees", or if someone skateboards a lot might say “board” instead.

Personally, I don't say the word "soft drink" enough to bother/think about a slang term.

No, I hadn't read the article until you brought it to my attention. I HATE THAT!!

Ah, there are a couple examples I forgot: inline skating vs. Rollerblading, vacuuming vs. Hoovering (GAH!).... SO ANNOYING!!! I understand why Google is upset. Bleck.

That happens alot with successful brands as you demonstrated. I forget what my economics prof called it but it can have both positive and negative sides to it. A Pro is that all of that when someone thinks of that product they think of your product, the flip side to that is; Con your product name is used even for lower quality products of similar make which can lower your name brand worth. There are lots more but I can't remember them ll of the top of my head.
