The Boba Fett mystique
I've noticed for years that Boba Fett seems to be the most popular of the minor characters in the original trilogy. He had little screen time and died a rather ignominous death, so what is it about him that seems to capture people's imaginations so strongly?

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Good question. I don't recall ObiWan revealing that knowledge to anyone during the movie.. but when giving his report later he might have mentioned it to Yoda and Mace Windu.Montcalm wrote:Are you sure Vader knew Boba Fett was an unaltered clone.LadyTevar wrote:That's because Vader knew who/what BobaFett was... question is, did Fett know who Vader was?Grand Admiral Thrawn wrote:Look at how Calrissian talked to Vader. Boba is liked because Vader likes him and WE ALL LOVE WHAT LORD VADER LIKES, DON'T WE? SHHH! He may be listening and my throat already hurts.
WHAT!!
Star Wars isn't real!? There goes my plans to buy the Death Star.
Seriously though, people like him for the same reason people like anti-heroes, they are not that dark and still are sort of above the law.

Re: The Boba Fett mystique
He's a cool bad-ass in a movie which is mostly filled with either earnest good-guys or rampaging villains.johnmarkley wrote:I've noticed for years that Boba Fett seems to be the most popular of the minor characters in the original trilogy. Nowadays, "cool bad-ass" is a fucking stereotype; most directors make sure to fill their movies wall-to-wall with such characters. But in Star Wars, he was it. Hence the mystique, which was only enhanced by his mysterious "man of few words" persona.

That summarizes the Fett mystique beutifuly. Personaly I liked Fett for his unique looks. He seemed to be the best in ROTJ.He's a cool bad-ass in a movie which is mostly filled with either earnest good-guys or rampaging villains.

That must have been stupid of him but I still like the way he looks in his armor. Of course he may not be one of your favorite characters since it is a matter of personal choice and everybody has their own set of favorite characters.Oh, you mean before being knocked into the Sarlacc by a blind man?

Shouldn't Vader sense he was a clone? I have always liked Fett, but now mention of him leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Thanks a lot, Lucas, with your having to have a Boba Fett-look alike in Episode 2, and having a totally unneccesary background for Fett.

Maybe Lucas wanted a sideline connection between the two trilogies, not just the Skywalker connection.DPDarkPrimus wrote:I have always liked Fett, but now mention of him leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It does knock Boba down a bit to have him be literally his father's son, but considering the source, Boba is still a scary guy to have coming after you even if he's only half the bounty hunter Jango was. It's possible that Boba helped Darth Vader bring down the Jedi, and that Vader may have shown him a few tricks to defeat Jedi. That could be the form his betrayal of the Jedi order took, teaching a bounty hunter to hunt Jedi so they could be brought before Sidious and turned or killed. If that's so, then Boba would have surpassed Jango. It's speculation, to be sure, but if you look at what's shown as setup, it can lead to a cool payoff in a couple years. Of course none of this takes away how shockingly lame Boba Fett's exit from Return of the Jedi was (subsequent stories about his escape notwithstanding).
Boba was a hit because he was a minor character in a fabulous movie, and he was 'expandable' but never was. The character was malable and expandable but was killed off too early in RotJ so when EU came along, writers wanted to expand on this mysterious character.
Some did it well and others did it like shit. Who and What is up too you the reader. Personaly, I don't like what Boba became in the EU but thats just me.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
