They are in the navy. ( Everyone takes part in damage control on ship)

Nah. You have to be a celebrity to get that kind of result. But give Koji and I a few days and I bet we can come up with a cultscam that people would put down their poisoned jello for.

The Cult of Lothar.

Basically, you sit in a darkened room for eighteen hours a day, surrounded by incense. You are not allowed to eat meat, eggs, peanut butter, nor are you allowed to wear polyester, nylon, or cotton. Further, you are required to commit a considerable sum to the Cult each day.

However, you get free sex with all the members of the Cult whenever you want. Enjoy.

I'm sure that there isn't any objective reason for chaplains to be in the military. Wouldn't it be more effiecient to just find a normal officier who happens to be well-versed in several religions and make him a chaplain, while he continues with his average duties undeterred?

I think there's a shitload of religious people in the military, so unless they were put into the minority, you won't see chaplains disappearing very soon as they act as a counselor to them.

But wouldn't serving as a multi-faith religious whatever be a distraction? That's the problem -- unless it can be shown that Chaplains serve at least a combat support role, their function is nonessential, and military resources could be better allocated.

Well, there you have something. Chaplains serve, at best, as a communal security blanket. A military where such a thing is unnecessary is preferable, but how that could be accomplished I have no idea.

Well, you could make it so that only athiests can have a government job....But I'm almost certain that would violate the Bill of Rights.

Chaplains do more than that. The Guv'ment doesn't do that "We regret to inform you..." Horseshit anymore, Chaplains go. Chaplains run marriage conseling before folks get married. Chaplains have the bennie of being sorta-kinda "outside" of the chain of command, so they can make sure no one is being abused/harrased without worrying about retribution.

You don't need to be an atheist in order to hold a secular job, but you do need to perform your job without injecting religion into it. No goddamned morning prayer meetings like the ones John Ashcroft has been performing in his Temple, er- office.

He's seriously doing that? God lawd!

You heard about how he wasted my taxpayer money by covering up that statue in the Capitol, right? He also doesn't approve of kissing and dancing. I'm pretty sure that makes Herr Ashcroft a Puritan. Fucking asshole. Why, if it were up to me...GAKK!

I Still can hear the outcry in the USA when Germany was putting a bit more pressure on Scientology, and are still trying to take their state as a religion away from them...

I can't speak for the other services, but in the Air Force no. They go through an abridged OTS and receive a commission. They aren't actual line officers, they have no authority over anyone except other chaplains or enlisted member assigned to work in the chapel. Also, most religious services are not performed by chaplains. If you are a Muslim, the chances of you having a Muslim chaplain lead your group is slim to nil. A chaplain will schedule your group time in the chapel and assist you in say gathering necessary worship items, but your group will be lead by someone from the community, or a member a fellow Muslim servicemen. This also applies if you're a Wiccan, Buddist, Hindu, Mormon, and a lot of times even Catholic. As from this example, it is easy to see that the job of chaplain can easily be provided an officer or sargeant assigned morale duties.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

That won't work at all with the US Army, and the other Branches would have to re-train the replacement personnal.

I haven't had much luck finding the requirements for Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard Chaplains.

Hmmm, I'm kind of curious if the Army would accept a Kemetic, or Asatru, or Druid chaplain
