I seem to remember it being from the Midwest, actually. Wisconson (sic?) is coming to mind.

There's a half chance I'm going on a US exchange next year to OSU in Corvallis, and I'm a' taking the accents with me :D all of them, upper class, welsh, scots, full on geordie, yorkshire and full northern! It is my aim to be completely incomprehensible to any US speaker... :)

That would be an interesting experiment; see who's more incomprehensible to the average American. A person from the deep south who has a thick Mountain accent or a person from the UK with a thick Welsh or Cockney accent. I've heard both when I took a class on Accents and Dialects and I can't tell which is more like some weird alien language. :)

I live in Northeastern Ohio. There's a ton of people who act and use mannerisms like they're from the south. Hell, sometimes for no reason at all I'll talk like a southerner. I've never said "y'all" seriously, though.

The South has rised again, north to Ohio apparently.

Oh yeah, I hear people can tell you're from this part of the Midwest by saying "pop" instead of "soda" or "cola." :?

EDIT: Northen=Northeastern.

Accents can be melodic at times. I know a Phillipino priest who had a very cool accent that distracted moi from listening to his sermon. Turns out I didn't miss much :P I remember doing a play in 8th grade, where I played a French soldier. I was unprepared and my fake accent slipped into German, Welsh, Norwegian, Russian, and Italian. Later on, an old flame of mine, playing Martha Washington, had a bout of indecision between whether to use a British or Southern accent. She tried both, sounding so Cokney everyone in the class, including her, were rolling on the ground with amusement. Good times......................
P.S. I personally have a sort of twang when I talk, but nothing significant.

I came from The North, I used to speak Standard English, but my vowels have thickened a bit, probably from learning spanish and hebrew early on. Since coming down South, I have adapted some mannerisms. Y'all is one of em :?

"American" accent? There is such a beast? I speak with a nice little southern twang thankyouverymuch.

Although, Lucy Lawless is one of the best voice actresses. Xena sounds nothing like her real accent, a VERY heavy NZ twang.
