Atomic implosion?

Post by His Divine Shadow »

I remember seeing something on discovery about making atoms implode, causing them to release phenomenal amounts of energy, anyone know what that's all about? Though I think it had something to do with ZPE.

My guess is it is either 1) refers to the usage of a fission bomb to compress (implode) fusion fuel in a thermonuclear bomb, or 2) is complete and utter hogwash.

It was something about making an atom implode on itself and release alot of energy.

No, implosion, imagine an atomic collapsing in upon itself.

I thought that was hell impossible, with Neutron Stars being the proof for that...

you can sort of implode an atom by forcing electrons to combine with protons to form neutrons, but that doesnt release energy i dont think.

Sure it would. Where would all the potential energy between the proton and electron go otherwise?

Into the neutron.

Neutrons spontaneously decay into protons and electrons; this is obvious proof that the energy state of the proton and electron is LOWER than the energy state of the neutron, not higher. Imploding an atom will COST energy, not generate it.

the binding energy required to hold the neutron as a neutron. see, neutrons DECAY into protons and electrons, so putting them back together is an energy negative process.
