I'm not sure this counts, but it seems that Margaret Thatcher managed to make herself the most universally despised woman in the UK. :)

How about Aspasia, who cleverly wrapped Pericles(and all of Athen's elite) around her finger?
Or a Ms. Darc. Never heard of her? Hint:A witch! A witch! A witch!
Or maybe even Deborah, the only female judge?
Just some possible candidates.....

My old testament is a bit shaky, I'll get back to you. Usually prophets had to work at getting their message across.

If you want women who did things for their gender you look at Susan B Anthony and Queen Victoria.
Susan B Anthony helped the sufferage movement.
And Victoria, did her very best to hinder it.
Victoria for some reason felt that women should not get the right to vote.

Well, no monarch would be overly impressed by the concept of voting and democracy...

Hatshepsut is a good one.

Sara did well (the only time God ever interefered in a domestic dispute he told Abraham to do as his wife, Sara, told him. The first 'yes dear')...

Scherezade, Jeanne D'arc...

My kinda chick, really.

Especially when played by Milli Avital in the miniseries. Mmmmmm....

Other female leaders include Golda Meir, but she could not be described as a tasty dish. A lumpy potato, perhaps. And she was not exactly an inspirational example of leadership either.

As for female leaders, I simply have to mention Countess Elisabeth Bathory. The female Dracula. (Okay, I admit she didn't do much except for kill a lot of people and bathe in their blood! But I felled compelled to mention her.)

It seems that when women gained power in archaic societies, they were worried about preserving their power, not liberating the female masses.

Well, of course. We're just as power-hungry as anyone else, being human, too. *crooked grin* That's what makes feminist fantasies of a matriarchal utopia so ridiculous--all the great women of history have in general been the rules of hegemonic nations, or led revolts against them, and done anything to hold onto power. They've also almost universally been competent. Rarely does one reach that level in a male-dominated society without being competent..

Bodiccea
Didn't she basically do nothing but get her ass kicked by the Romans? Or am I thinking of someone else? Not that getting one's ass kicked by the Romans is all that shameful, what with all the ass they kicked...
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! She got her ass kicked something severe. She had great success looting defenseless towns though.

AHEM...

She burnt down London (Londinium), razed several small Roman outposts, and did quite well against the Legion at their first meeting. The second meeting is what killed her.

The reason for her rampage against the Romans? There was a dispute over who should rule the Iceni after her husband's death, with the Romans claiming they were given control. When Boudicca told them to get out, the Romans sacked the camp and gang-raped Boudicae and her daughters.

So, even if the Romans did finally defeat her, she still gave them a bloody nose.

PS. Spellings of her name changes with the scholar talking about it.
