Seriously, I'm glad I live in a first world country.

An negative opinion is not prejudice if it is also factual. The Duchess's comparison may or may nor be exaggerated, but it nevertheless true, at least on a basic level.

She does not provide supporting evidence for her claim.

Which claim? The fact that over two-thirds of the world's HIV-positive population is located in Africa is common knowledge; add in that India's population is higher (by about 300 million), and the picture looks even worse. The fact that India is industrializing (i.e. is a "developing country") is even more widely known, while most of the countries in Africa are still third-world.

I don't see any of the Duchess's claims as anything controversial enough to require extended proof. Just common knowledge combined with common sense would do.

I've been to India twice. My father's family originally came from Goa, a state in India that used to be a Portugeuse colony. Goa is a beautiful place and though it is primitive compared to where I live, it was a great place to visit. I've also been to Bombay and a tiger reserve in Madya Pradesh (in the same area that Rudyard Kipling wrote about in Jungle Book). India really is a fascinating place despite the poverty. Don't let one article sour you on it. If you ever get the chance, you should really visit it.

Slow metabolism maybe? Hell, there are cases of worms in the amazon that can literally swim UPSTREAM when you urinate and get inside your body!

Evilcat is right. The situation in India is bad like this, but hardly as severe as it's being bad out to be like from some of the people in this thread. Quite simply, these are just the problems a developing country faces as it industrializes. Europe went through the same sorts of poverty for the lower classes in the 19th century, and the fact that this is happening in India is actually a good sign of sorts, when coupled in with the signs of growth.
You are correct, India is a future global power in making. Already she has surpassed many of Europes less advanced countries.

India is well advanced in the scientific field, they can build nukes, lauch satelites, build a radio telescope and do lots of other things that are only done in western countries. Bangalore in India has one of the largest collection of computer based industries in the entire world. Companies like microsoft just love hiring Indians as they are highly educated and skilled. By the next decade India will be giving China a run for her money.
Remember, this kid is going to survive--he's getting surgery. In Africa there'd be dozens of kids like this and they'd all die. And a few others would have been eaten by cannibals, and a few thousand more would be dying of AIDS. That's the difference between "developing" and "third world" and it's a pretty stark one.
Almost every surgery that can done in the west can also be done in India. It is possible that you may have noticed the large number of Indian or south asian doctors in America. They are very good and American hospitals pay them generously to have them work here.

Perverts like rat worshippers exist in every country. They are a small section of the population and do not represent their counry.

When did your family left Goa ? Before or after the Indian army took over the place ?

Quite awhile before I believe. I think my great grandfather was the first to leave. My grandparents were born in Uganda and so was my father.
