Women - as sexy now as then?

Post by Stravo »

I'm standing outside Fifth Avenue looking at some fine women walking along, summer in NYC brings out the exhibitionist in women - short shorts, tank tops, t shirts, summer dresses (FAVORITE, drrooollll) etc. I watch them and enjoy myself for a while and as usual my mind starts flashing trhough several lines of thought. I had seen walking with cavemen and the women of the cromagnon man and up all looked pretty godawful, a costume drama I saw as well also depicted many women of the medieval times as rather unattractive. So this makes me wonder, have women gotten progressively better looking or do you think that the same standard ratio of good looking to ugly looking women continued even back then?

A ratio beautifull/ugly has always existed, but nowadays, the women are more concerned in relation to their beauty, and how they can compete with other women. This ration has, consequently, favored the beautifull.
One can only see the profits made by the cosmethics industry, or by plastic surgeons, to see how much women care about how they look.

I think that women worry about it more because of tv and the media. So women this days are trying harder to be what is call "beautiful". So i would say that you are more likely to see beautiful women these days. Obivously beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Explanation: as for medieval women being rather unattractive - back then, women either didn't use makeup - or they used way too much of it.

Well, back in the old days, everything most guys look for in a girl, such as thin, etc. would not let you survive, most of the girls born who weren't, well, butch, died off real quick. Nowadays there is less threat of dying so more pretty girls are coming about.

Standards of beauty are also cultural. And species oriented in the case of primitive man. A hot homo hablis woman probably wouldn't look all that appealing to you. It depends on the standards of beauty you have and society instills in people.

Makeup has nothing to do with it, Simon. The Egyptians were obsessed with the stuff.

The difference is HEALTH. Women today are healthier - that means they have softer, cleaner skin, clear eyes (no sores or redness), clean, well-kept hair free of dirt and bugs, strong bones and muscles to help with that arched back and slinky walk, and clean, well-kept teeth for that perfect smile.

Health, pals. It's all about the health.

Back before this modern era the only thign you really looked for was "Can she have kids, can she have lots of kids, and will the kids survive." Now it's more "How big are her breasts and is she good in bed."

My "Human-Kaminoan Crossbreed" joke coming back from the dead to haunt you, eh?

But I really like the title "Mantis-Men From Mars." When I finish my serious sci-fi novella, I'll start writing some campy pulp space opera called "Mantis-Men From Mars."

I said that they either didn't use makeup or used way too much of it. And excessive use of cosmetics isn't healthy, either.

(I once saw a girl who fashioned her eyeliner after the way ancient Egyptians did... and frankly, she looked really weird. Not to say she wasn't attractive.)[/quote]

I think so, personally. The 90's really kicked the whole fitness/appearance craze into high gear. With magazines like Cosmo out there, women get the impression that if they don't have a nice, firm body, they're worthless to society, so they work out and diet more. They also tan a lot more, which is a big plus, in my opinion. Also, girls now where more revealing clothing than before. When you see a good-looking girl in the summer, she's usually in short-shorts or a Summer dress (also my favorite :) ). This generation's women definitely wear much sexier clothing than previous ones. That's probably a big part of your observations, as well.

For better or worse, this generation's emphasis is on appearance and sex appeal, and it shows. ;)

I think each era has had their share of hot looking women. I think beauty is also relative to each culture. Some cultures find bigger women to be very attractive and other cultures stress pencil thin models.

I think you might be overlooking the fashion f the 60's, which aren't that different than today's, except of course that they didn't have modern materials to work with.
