Hyperspace Tactics
Considering that according to most sources, star wars ships can reach massive FTL speeds and can go pretty deep into a gravity well, would not a good tactic in starwars to put a defending fleet in a system that is pretty light as a trap and as ssone as attacked, a larger group is stationed outside of the ortz clouds and simply huper into the combat as soon as the main fleet is engaged.

Thrawn did something similar to this in the HTTE trilogy.Kitsune wrote:Considering that according to most sources, star wars ships can reach massive FTL speeds and can go pretty deep into a gravity well, would not a good tactic in starwars to put a defending fleet in a system that is pretty light as a trap and as ssone as attacked, a larger group is stationed outside of the ortz clouds and simply huper into the combat as soon as the main fleet is engaged.
When he attacked Coruscant to put the cloaked asteroids in it's orbit he first sent in a small force along with a few interdictors.
He had the interdictors set their fields so that his remaining force of Star Destroyers could jump directly from hyperspace into the exact position that they were needed in.

Well, with FTL coms, I don' t know why that woudl be needed in reality. One tactic I am thinking is have a fairly primitive 'Carrier' with x-wings, y-wings, a-wings, or other ftl capable fighters. You simply have the carrier stop ouside of system and then launcher your fighters into the main system.Wild Karrde wrote: Thrawn did something similar to this in the HTTE trilogy.

Think of it as a quick n' dirty way of getting ships to where they're needed without having to worry about synchronizingKitsune wrote:Well, with FTL coms, I don' t know why that woudl be needed in reality. muptiple ships or calculating precise coordinates.
I also think they were being jammed at the time by the NR, but I could be wrong I haven't read the Thrawn trilogy in awhile.

The only downside I can see to the use of that tactic is the effect on the hyperdrive. IIRC, while a hyperdrive will automatically cut off when in the presence of a large enough gravity well, it's not very good for it.Wild Karrde wrote:Think of it as a quick n' dirty way of getting ships to where they're needed without having to worry about synchronizingKitsune wrote:Well, with FTL coms, I don' t know why that woudl be needed in reality. Both the Rebels and the Imperials do have carrier vessels like that; the Imp ones are a good deal tougher since they have to get into the action to launchKitsune wrote:Well, with FTL coms, I don' t know why that woudl be needed in reality. That is an advanatge of ftl capable fighters, you can use a converted cargo ship for your carrier and not expose it to attackStriderteen wrote: Both the Rebels and the Imperials do have carrier vessels like that; the Imp ones are a good deal tougher since they have to get into the action to launch
