Galactus is an immortal super-being who is older than the universe (he is the embodied consciousness of the previous universe before this one). He preferentially consumes life energy for food, although he can also consume other forms of energy if necessary. When he first awoke, he was challenged by a mighty war fleet and promptly annihilated all of the ships and consumed the life energy and artificial energies of their crews and weapons.

At full strength (ie- when he's been feeding rather than starving himself to assuage his conscience), Galactus is immune to nuclear weapons or any other form of weaponry known to man. He consumes entire planets for food, leaving nothing but dessicated debris fields in his wake. He once consumed much of a star's energy and grew to planetary dimensions so that he could do battle with a living planet.

I believe the only means that any non-godlike being has to stop Galactus is to use the Ultimate Nullifier, which is a weapon that kills both the target and wielder--almost irregardless of either's status. According to Marvel continuity, he is also a fundamental force in today's universe and neither can exist without the other. But this must be taken with a grain of salt, considering that Galactus is currently dead. (comic book death is seldom the real deal, fortunately)

And in the Earth X/Universe X/Paradise X continuity (seperate from the "real" continuity, but cool anyways), Franklin Richards turned himself into Galactus after going insane. Then, as Galactus, he did battle with a large group of Celestials and won.

Earth X also postulated that Celestials use planets as wombs, and that Galactus preferred to consume planets with Celestial embryos in them, to keep the Celestial population down.

And I believe the Ultimate Nullifier negates all existence, hence Galactus' fear of it.

Speaking of Marvel planet-killers, Franklin Richards is one, even in the real continuity.

Image

When he saw his parents and their super-hero friends sacrificing their lives to save Earth, he subconsciously created another universe, and placed all of the dying superheroes there.
This new universe threw off the chi of all the bigwigs in the universe, so the Celestials came to Franklin to tell him he had to set it all back to normal. If I recall correctly, even the Celestials were afraid of his power (hence them asking him to kindly change everything back). They told him to either destroy the universe he created, or they'd destroy both it and the Marvel universe (I don't think they really could do this, but Franklin is easily fooled; ref. Onslaught, others).
So he destroyed the universe he created. Luckily, the combined genius of Reed Richards, Victor Von Doom, Anthony Stark, and Bruce Banner (isn't it cool that in the realm of superheroes intelligence can be a superpower?) devised a way to transport the misplaced heroes from the dying universe to their rightful one.

I know, that's superhero sci-fi, which isn't very plausible even by Trek standards, but it's cool as hell.

not really a planet killer, ie, you can't kill a earth-like planet with it, but the Alchemist is one damn cool star and gas giant killing weapon, capable of snuffing out a sun at a higher setting, or doing so much damage to one that it explode as a nova in a lower setting.

Do you think Earth would survive the contact with a black hole ( Alchemist at high setting ) ? I don't think so...

like the graviton warheads of the 4th/5th Empire the Alchemist is one of the few small and portable planet/sun-killers. 8) 8)

Actually, Galactus is alive again in the Mainstream Marvel Universe. He was brought back to life in Fantastic Four a few months ago primarily by Franklin Richard's powers. (Franklin used his powers and supposedly burned out his powers to restore Galactus and to give his mom a second chance to have his sister Valerie)

Oh and in Earth X, I didn't have the impression that Franklin went nuts and became Galactus; I had the impression that at some point between Marvel Now and Earth X future, the FF realized that the Death of Galactus was a Big Mistake in the Grand Scheme of Things, so the FF had to come up with a solution to this problem they created. Franklin by then was old enough to make his own decisions and still had his powers then, so he volunteered to basically give up his memories of Earth and his family and become the new Galactus through and through.

At least that was my impression. :)

Oh and Galactus is still one of the coolest Planet Killers out there. What other Planet Killers can come to your planet to destroy it and still look good in a huge Purple Tuning Fork Hat?

Beast Planet, Unicron and Mantrid Drones are runners up too, all of them just for the sheer terror they inspire as they come in to tear you, your friends, everything you knew and love down including the ground beneath your feet into its component atoms and molecules.

The Mantrid drones qualify for several reasons:

1) you only 1 of them to get started (self-replication)
2) they can fit inside a house (SF tech that can fit inside a house)
3) no independant thought (Franklin Richards)
4) they don't need to devour planets (Galactus gets hungry now and then)
5) Mantrid destroyed an entire universe with them in season 2 (stars, quasars, black holes, planets, everything)

For utter simplicity and style I have to go with "Happy Fun Ball".

For the best and most intimidating and terrifying design and function I nominate the Shadow Death Cloud.

His Imperial Majesty's Planetoid Dahak. A 4th Empire Planetoid is what the Death Star wants to be when it grows up. One warhead and your planet or star is fucked. You got to love hypermissles with a gravitonic warhead. Or if a missle isn't your style you can open up with the main energy battery and savage the planet with an bombardment that'll make a BDZ look like soft rain.

Death Star. Why? Because it was the first one I saw/heard off when I was a weee little fella, and it's just stuck with me since then.

Hey he's right

Is that the only time they use Quantum correctly in any sci-fi?

A Fifth Imperium Planetoid would rape the Suncrusher. Warp cannon - drops whatever it hits into hyperspace; anything in hyper which is not protected by a drive field gets destroyed. Gravitonic disruptor - shatters nuclear bindings. Gravitonic warhead - produces a black hole when it detonates. Planetoids can also destroy stars, by either using their Enchanach drives close to a star or by hitting it with one of the Ubergravitonics.

Would a Shadow Death Cloud put up a good fight against the DS? I mean, after all, there is nothing for the Superlaser to hit.

For me, toss up between several things...

The Vorlon Planet Killer (it was a big bulldozer, damnit!)

Space Demon King Ghidorah

and of course, the Death Star. Just because.

Hell an old Utu-class would do the job, let alone something of the Imperial Terra-class. The only prayer the sun crusher would would be to sneak in and nova the star with out being detected. And hope that the planetoid is caught so flat footed it can't avoid the nova and with zero t0 .6c in seconds that's not likely to happen. Of vourse with all the shields concentrated in real space it might be able to shrug off a nova anyway.

Actually, the limitation of it's sublight drives is pointless in this case. If the sun's gone supernova, the system is fucked, so there is no reason why the Utu can't use it's Enchanach drive to get away.
