Hes been dead for weeks. Why do you think nothing has been seen of him since he left the Senate?

Actually, hes really been dead for years. Everryone knows the Stromm we saw lately was just a Disney animatronic.

That's two dead segregationists in one week (Lester Maddox died a few days ago, also).

Fuck you, fucker. The man was a war hero and you prove yourself to be a contemptible scum-coward by defaming his memory the moment after he died. Are you so completely, utterly worthless that you couldn't insult him while he was still alive? It appears so; you're just a lazy, whiney sicko who needs to prove how much of a coward he is, too, by insulting dead people who don't even have the potential to fight back, and have at least done honourable service to their country, whatever else they did or views they held. Fuck off!

A dead war hero. The man's faults may deserve mention in life; but there's no proof that his redemption was insincere, and that considered, his miltiary service deserves to outshine his less admirable traits now that he is dead and gone. When the man was in the political realm, he deserved to have his reputation and his history justly questioned for such things. Now that his body is cold? He fought for his country; remember only that.

It's alright. I'm just really upset at Kojikun for expressing pleasure at the man's death. That sort of emotion is totally contemptible; the man was hardly some sort of black-and-white cardboard cutout of evil. He helped free millions of people by jumping out of an airplane over France, one of the worst and most dangerous missions of the entire Normandy operation. Sure, a very flawed individual, but he's dead now, and I just can't stand contemptible cowards like Kojikun defaming people who were willing to make such an ultimate sacrifice, after they are dead, and unable to respond.

as far as I know, he gave up the segregationism before my parents were born. I cant really rail against him for that.

from what I know of him, he was an amazing politician. things are going to seem somewhat different without him there.

south carolina is going to be very sad this week.

In any case, when I would watch him in the Senate, old and feeble but always nice, I could never blame him for his old views.

Didn't you defend Manji on SB.com when he cheered that Paul Wellstone died? Said that (and I quote) "In fairness to Manji, Wellstone was a political figure, and so one can expect opinions about such people to be naturally more charged.

Exactly. And I'm attacking Kojikun--which the contemptible slug deserves--now because of Thurmond's military service. Show me where Paul Wellstone served in the military and I'll retract that statement defending Manji immediately.

Anyway, while I don't necessarily agree with his policies on all occasions, I did have respect for him, so I'm sorry to see him go.

Have you jumped out of an airplane into hostile territory before, fucktard? You're just digging a hole for yourself.

So military service automatically earns political figures a bye from criticism on the grounds of their political history? Marina, I expected better from you.

No--I'm saying you should respect the military dead, even if they were political figures. Strom Thurmond is now Major General Thurmond, deceased, not Senate Thurmond. Understand?

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, Thurmond left the bench and joined the Army. He was commissioned as a lieutenant with the First Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

Thurmond participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day and was awarded five Battle Stars. In all, he earned 18 decorations, medals and awards for his military service. Thurmond served 36 years in Reserve and on active duty, attaining the rank of major general in the U.S. Army Reserve.
There you go. 82nd Airborne veteran...

Hes former military, Duchess. And I do not award respect for people I dislike just because they're willing to jump out of planes to support their assbackward ideals. Nice big overexaggeration here, but noone respects Hitler because he fought in WWII. They DISrespect him because he was an asshole. I don't judge men on their willingness to die otherwise I'd be giving respect to every cuntlick fucker who comitted suicide. Contribution to society matters, and jumping out of a plane didn't contribute in a way that outways his asshole-ness. Yeah, hes got balls, big deal. Lots of people are brave or braver.

I will respect Major General Thurmond, but not the Senator thrumond who fought so many civil rights bills.

I admit my memory may be wrong on that last part, so I will retract that statement if I am shown he did vastly more good than bad.
