Fusion when?

Fusion when?
When will we have usable fusion generators and what form will they take?
What are the minimum requirements to produce fusion?

I have no idea when will have working fusion generator's unless building a ring of windmills around an H bomb and then detonating it counts.

Guesstimates I've heard from my father's connections at CFFTP are in the 5-decade range. Of course, in the 1950s when they started research in earnest, guesstimates were also in the 5-decade range, so I'd take those guesstimates with a grain of salt

You would need to run any electricity into a big ass capacitor or battery through, since you'd only be getting bursts of power from it.NapoleonGH wrote:that could acutally be a useable power source, take an island like the size of the blast radius of your bombs, blow the bombes and collect the wind, have heat collection devices as well

And since a grain of salt is basically one crystal, then it is a one ton cube in this case.Darth Wong wrote:Guesstimates I've heard from my father's connections at CFFTP are in the 5-decade range. use it to power a motor which turns a flywheel. this is a method of storing enegery that is done with some powerplants or so i remember hearing

Hmmm, well their is the group ITERhttp://www.iter.org/ which is working to show that Fusion can be practical. Im guessing that once the ITER facility gets up and going it will be around 20-30 years before research done by that group starts producing practical fusion solutions.

Re: Fusion when?
Are you talking fusion generators that just surprass break-even point? Or are you talking fusion generators that are commercially viable? We'll probably hit break-even in around 50-75 years. Yes, they said 50 years, fifty years ago, but the technology is actually getting to the point where we can actually make good on those promises. But it'll take a century, before fusion is used on a widespread commercial basis (or even just on a basic commercial basis.)kojikun wrote:When will we have usable fusion generators and what form will they take?

We've past break even, Terwynn. But only by a fraction of an insignificant amount. The real issue is having a method of fusion that doesnt require ridiculous amounts of energy put in.
Which raises again the question: What are the requirements for fusion?

It's not breaking even. It's keeping the plasma stable enough to fuse for long periods of time that's the bitch now.kojikun wrote:We've past break even, Terwynn. Break even is when power out > power in. We've done this. Tho the power out may be like 1 watt more then power in, which makes fusion useless. For now.Vorlon1701 wrote:It's not breaking even. It's keeping the plasma stable enough to fuse for long periods of time that's the bitch now.
I think some new theories need to be considered, but I would have no idea what they are right now. I couldn't even propose anything to mess with cause I dont know the requirements for fusion (i beleive temperatures of 50MK are required, but I don't know)
