The picture isn't by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. He does paintings for Eva art.

This looks like fan art, or done by someone else for a magazine.

There are literally dozens of these kind of pictures, official and fan-made.

I wasn't trying to make a joke. I found the pic and thought, "How many other things seen here and there, like this pic, simply CANNOT happen in the real thing???"

And I posted here.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto has drawn those two togethor many times. Story wise it makes no sense, but this is just the art. However I don't really think that that's his work. It's not in any of my art books that I have. I like it though.

It isn't by Sadamoto. First, virtually all of his artwork look like paintings, not cells or lineart. Second, he always signs his pieces "Y.S"

You can see how his pieces look by checking out my desktop of Lilith, which is in the current Desktop thread in A&P.

The only thing that looks like a signature here is "yuji". I think this is either a piece of fan art, or something done by someone for a magazine, since it looks similar to several pieces (not just how the girls are drawn, which looks familiar, but also using a real background) that appeared in Newtype.

You're right, that isn't likely. I don't know what's more unlikely Asuka hugging "Wonder Girl" there or Rei looking like she gets anything out of it. This is fan art. I know Sadamoto Eva art when I see it and it's never so out of character and is usually done with gousche. (I actually think from reading the manga that Sadamoto has a better grip on the NGE than Anno did; Anno made the vision of the end of the world disturbing, but Sadamoto made it be tragic and painful as well)

The manga is non-canon, actually.

While the manga is interesting, Sadamoto makes some really weird alterations with the story and themes. I don't think that he had a better grasp on Eva then Anno, especially given that Anno created Eva in the first place.

Sorry, but the VERY first thing that came to mind was "off cannon". Of course, I've seen some ridiculous slashfics that somehow manuver the two together, but otherwise, I just could NOT see it happening. Keep in mind, I can only base it off of the Anime's Cannon, as I've only read up to what's come out translated in the manga.

That aside, that's heavenly pic for Asuka and Rei obsessors.

Singular Quartet: Yes, that is an offical art piece done by the character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, since it's in his style and has the "Y.S" signature under Rei's knee.

EDIT: Gah, I can't believe I haven't saved these pictures to my Eva folder yet!! *right-clicks, save as...*

Well, Asuka did try and be nice and make friends with Rei when they first met...

I think that if Rei was a normal girl and not a vessel, the first picture probably could be possible.

The second is just a pretty picture to look at.
