I Think this a gross violation of the Constition. This ruling violates article 11 of the Constitution which states:
Amendment XI
The judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by citizens of another state, or by citizens or subjects of any foreign state.

A "gross violation of the Constitution" isn't nitpicking a ruling that might violate the 11th amendment. A gross violation would be using government property to peddle religion.The Founding Fathers of the United States wrote:Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

I fail to see how this is an 11th Amendment violation, as the defendant in the suit was an officer of the state acting unconstitutonally (see Osborn v. Bank of the United States), not the state of Alabama itself. It is permissible to sue a state official if his actions violate Federal or Constitutional law, thereby stripping him of the sovereign immunity granted by the 11th Amendment.
As for the ruling itself, I can't imagine any Federal court would have ruled otherwise. This is as blatant a First Amendment violation as you're likely to see under normal circumstances today.
