Epic battle video game question

Post by Tasoth »

After watching AOTC again, the ending battle struck the same chord in me that the ROTJ deathstar assault did and many a movies large scale battle's do. So here's the question: are their any games that can pull off that effect in a 1st/3rd person setting? Freespace comes close to epic space battles, as does Homeworld, but I want a ground battle. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Epic ground battles? Hmm... you may want to try Rise of Nations, possibly Battlefield 1942 if you're into FPSs... Gettysburg/Antietam for Civil War stuff... Blitzkrieg and Sudden Strike 2 for WWII and finally Medieval: Total War for some good medieval shizzle.

Unreal Tournament with Monster Madness? You and 16 bots against up to 125 respawning Unreal monsters acting as a team, on any UT map. It's cheap, it's a lot of fun, and on the right map it's nothing short of epic. :)

Red Alert 1 can get close. It helps to edit the rules.ini to allow for more units on the map - I think the default limit is 500 units, but I cranked mine up to 2500 recently and it runs fine.

I agree on both those points. Brood War wasn't the best game, but the intro kicked ass.

CnC ALL THE WAY!! Ra1 had the best battle "feel", I think. Since that, you had to think more about what to build (25+ units per side in RA2) than going and blowing stuff up. In RA1, you just clicked on your selected tank about 50 times, and then go play with the enemies base. Hours of fun

If by 1st/3rd person you mean FPS or action, probably the best "epic battle" I've seen in a game is the Aumaan gate battle in Zone of the Enders 2. Essentially, it's you and 41 other units against close to a thousand enemies, who come in massive waves that are thick enough that you'll hit something hostile regardless of where you shoot at. Unfortunately, this effect is somewhat spoiled by the fact that 40 of your 41 allies can't fight worth beans (their guns have a lousy refire rate and they get mobbed easily), leaving you as the main combatant and the other competent unit (the Vic Viper, of Gradius fame) flying around healing everyone else instead of fighting. Still, it manages to reproduce the feel of a battlefield in utter chaos.

EPIC is, for me, co-operative Serious Sam with, say, a shitload of teammates against the unwavering thousands of incoming enemies, some of which top a hundred feet tall.

*WARNING; DUST-AND-COBWEBS-COVERED POST*

Well, the last mission of Syndicate (NOT Syndicate Wars, I'm talking about the original) was on the Atlanctic reseach center, your 4 agents against hundreds of enemy agents, guards and police.
Those that escaped the initial laser fire and gauss guns were latter killed by the time bombs conveniently left by their comrades, AND if somehow they did survive, I would present them with my miniguns.

In skirmish mode battle screen (were you set up the game, before hitting start) Hold down the following keys: SHIFT, 8, X

That allows for ten players in a skirmish game.

Stuff the 500 unit patch. Get the 5000 unit patch here. This is patch alters 4 bytes in the exe. If you host a game with the 5k patch, any body can use the 5k unit limit for that game.

Shogun and Medieval.

Another great one for sweeping battles was always Operation Flashpoint, I once made an Armoured Company vs Armoured Company map. Not fun.

Ta with Uberhack 3.6
Just finished a game a couple of hours ago 3000 kills in under 2 hours. Smell the carnage. Large games with multiple people have been known to go on for 24+ hours. Kill counts reach the hundred thousands and sleep deprivation becomes the main enemy (remembers days of TA lan parties).
