You begin to notice the game's shortcomings once the main story concludes.

That game was crap. If you played wing commander, you have played freelancer. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty and all, but once i finished the first mission: fly far away and kill a ship, you have done them all. Mission two: fly even further away, and kill more ships!

Now if the game was more dynamic it would have been good. If you grounded, and then had a full RPG on the planets, it would have been playable. I'd rather play megatraveller than Freelancer, because it was just that, Freelancer with an RPG on the planets.

Combine a system like Freelancer into an upcoming upgrade for Star Wars Galaxies, and then it'll be in business.

I've seen the demo, and while pretty, it seems boring.

Eve Online looks a lot more interesting, personally.

The combat is indeed very repetitive and often boring, but the story is the best I've seen since Homeworld. However, once the story ends, it's basically time to uninstall. The planets and characters and the world have loads of charm, but it's all scripted into the story, once the story ends, so does the charm and personality of the universe, and there's no point to continued playing.

EVE online was even more boring than Freelancer in many regards. Earth and Beyond was in a similar vein as Freelancer, and was much more fun (plus being able to run around space stations helped to add to the experience, as you got to USE your character models, unlike in EVE, where you just have a pretty little screenshot that is never used again.

If you're looking for a game that is similar to Freelancer but will probably have considerably more depth and gameplay, check out Space Empires: Star Fury.

The graphics aren't as pretty as Freelancer (and obviously it lacks Juni's ass), but the gameplay should be pretty damn good.

I hear MS is going to make Freelancer into a massive online game, so that might be interesting. I think they should add in all the things not implemented, tho, like powerplant upgrade and such.

They'll need to completely rework the multiplayer then and give it purpose...Does anyone else find a running gunfight on planet for those cut scenes appealing?

Given the ability to do things on planet would easily increase playability. If only they could have followed the darkening route...a fully playable story...but the universe remains entact when you finish...or play multiplayer..

the game looked pretty...now lets hope they can sort the gaping holes in playability (after you've finished the campaign)

Yes. There needs to be a much greater mix of missions - convoying, police sweeps, etc. Hell, it'd be nice if you could join LSF or the military, for example.

Hell...even just simple cargo missions. Just some variety in the missions instead of 'go here...shoot that...go back home'

Indeed. Smuggling could be a huge addition by itself - and I mean more than the "head to Mactan and buy some Cardamine, then head to Manhatten." There's just no interaction.

Actually by the time I got to Brettonia I was well and truly sick of it. The gameplay was more repetitive than a Britney single stuck on repeat in an echoing room. Go and play X, at least you'll get something out of that.

This game is pretty to watch and can be fun to play for a while, but these are the things that piss me off:

Like Final Fantasy or any other console RPG, ships simply get better and better - just like that Mega-Ass Buster Sword, and the 80th level rats you killed with it. Basically you have 4 types of ships (IIRC): light, medium and heavy fighters, and freighters. The more you advance, the more powerful they get, with no drawbacks.

All ships have the same top speed.

Plus other oversimplified crap I don't like. I like my ship games to have some logic, and different models of ships that aren't SO unbalanced.

I'm all for anything with Space Empires in part of the name :)

Just a thought, have any of you tried mods? They are easy to install and add a lot to the game. Also online games run with huge battles(with some mods you have FLEETS with Bships and proper tactics).
