Unusual D&D Warfare Tactics

Post by Jadeite »

Ok, first Im going to start with some background info. A friend of mine is running a game in which my character is a Black Mage, FF9 style. He also has the personality of 8 Bit, except subtler and more manipulative. My plan is for my character to conquer the world, which is the Forgotten Realms. My friends game is a high magic setting, in which Mythallars exist. Iv used this knowledge out of character, and come up with some pretty nasty ideas.

1. Using mythallars as artillery. A mythallar can generate teleport fields, as evidenced by a Netherese city scouring fish from a lake with one. Simply take ammunition from a Thayan Bombard (which uses stones that use area effect magic when they hit) and teleport them into enemy cities from longe range. Theres nothing like having hundreds of fireballs, cloudkills and circle of death spells activating at once inside a metropolis.

2. Since a mythallar can levitate an object, and move it around (such as a city), It seems reasonable that one could take an iron sphere about the size of a house, use a mythallar to accelerate to high speed, and then teleport it near an enemy fortification.

3. Using a mythallar as artillery. When magic was canceled out in Faerun, all existing mythallars exploded, and decimated the towns they were in. Think of a specially modified one, that could detonate like a bomb. Simply teleport it into an city, and watch as the city is pretty much incinerated, not to mention really fucking up the local magic fields.

Ill think of more later if these were amusing to you people, anyone else got ideas?

Aside from the minor fact normal Mythallar can no longer operate in Faerun, these are fun.

A Netherese Mage, of course, can simply fling mountains as artillery all by themselves. Nothing beats a cubic kilometer of rock smashing into your opponents lines.

Well, you could have the "Two Elves" solution...

Two elves in WHFRP, each with effective ballistic skills of 130+ (out of 100). They were both getting 2 shots a round from Blessed Elf Bows, for a called shot (through the eye slit on a helmet at extreme range (-60 to hit penalty) it was still all to easy. These boys could out-shoot Legolas using their toes.

In hand to hand it turns into even more of a slaughter as one uses a pair of Blessed Mithril swords and the other a Blessed Mithril sword and shield and both wearing far too much Mithril armour... And both hitting at least 3 times a round with a far too much damage being dealt.

There was a reason those two characters were retired...

Since we're talking about the Netherese, it's work noting their normal spells...

Killing Wind is probably the most potent of the 'bang, you're dead' spells... It can fire up to 5 miles away, and cover a range up to five square miles. It fills the region so fast, if you can't teleport.. You're caught.

Even worse is the Pulse spell, demonstrated by Lady Polaris.. Exact calc's are difficult to pin down, but we're talking vaporizing human-like targets in a ~7 mile radius, and inflicting horrific burn wounds(4th-3rd degree burns over more than half their body) on everyone else in a 10 mile square cave. This was it's unfocused form. Focused on one point, it smacks around Pit Fiends and injures them on their home turf. Exact energy output is difficult, due to in-exacts of the ranges of devastation.

Heavy magic, Mythallars.. They're just cake.

Well, i don't play much, but last time i did, my friend jokingly hit another friend with a torch. The gm said there was a 1% chance the attack would hurt the player. Turns out that 1% was the bad one because a couple rolls later we had one very very dead somethingorother(i can't remember what he was).
Sorry if this isn't an unusual tactic, it was funny at the time.

Trust me my all time favorite spell is Dig....

Once when faced with a bad, bad man, who had a fortress that was proof against all missiles, reflected spells etc (Think Brad-Dur) I beat the sucker my having my Giant strength enhanced dwarf and a mage with several dig spells mine under the keep, and then finish off the last of the supporting material with one spell. My Dwarf then continued singing "John Henry" as we dug through the invulnerable fortress,.,,

Pop two Artifacts, one at each pole. Once the world is covered in water, your Aboleth allies and Sahuagin minions will handle the rest.

(Note that it will be all right for the aboleth to venture into the open ocean because the current sea level would become a deep and murky place)

Using wands of chain lightning to create railguns....

First cnstruct the barrel of your railguns... using magnetite or something similar for the electromagnets, and having walls of force lining the inside of the barel... then, set your wands, command word of your choice... then have them target the magnets... Load the raigun... say the command word.... FIRE!

back in second Edition there was priest spell named Dimensional Fold (sp?) a travel spell. Back then we had to attack a city of Kua-toas. Dimensional Fold was more like a dimensional door, just it remain open of sometime to anything pass by it both sides and much larger distances. We got a chicken, made the barbarian throw it by the dimensional fold against a building of some importance. Then during the move the mage polymorphed it in the biggest creature possible (it was a dragon by then), We had lucky, that the chicken did not died with his system shock and hit hard the bulding...
also we used to do hit and run tatics , but when we got back and still had some spell, we opened this and "fireball, fireball" against the civilians kua-toas to cause panic and chaos and the clerics used "stone shape" in different portions of the city walls, in the end of the siege, the city was all desert and full of holes...
