GL changes Star Wars "Look"

Post by Stravo »

I'm watchinf AOTC (HBO plays this movie daily) and something struck me as I was watching the Kamino scene.

One of the things that critics praised about the OT was that SW technology looked "lived in" Not clean and sterile like previous Sci Fi movies like 2001. Watching AOTC and remembering TPM *shudders involuntarily* the technology all looked so clean and austere. I think only Tatooine definately looked "lived in"

Does GL's over reliance on CGI effect his vision of SW in the prequel era?

I think it was intentional to show the difference between the decadence of the PT, Republic times, and the OT, which had people just trying to survive, so things weren't so pretty.

I think of it being like the difference between the big city and the boonies.

In the Prequels, we're seeing more richer parts of the Galaxy, such as the Core Worlds.

Tattooine looks just as dirty as it always did, for one thing.

And the Kaminoans are supposed to represent the shiny-clean, sterilized world of academia.

I think there's a lot of negative attitudes toward the scholarly and academic world. The Jedi represent your historians and social scientists, whereas the Kaminoans are the personification of the biologists and technocrats.

For one thing, Naboo does have a lived in atmosphere. Not so much as Tatooine, but then again their capitol is the only city we saw. The N-1s and Royal cruisers are royalty, so naturally its all nice and shiny.

The Kaminoan labs are supposed to be eerie, sterile, ulta-clean and shiny. That represents the conformity of the clones and such whatnot.

Now Tatooine is naturally a shithole, and that hasn't changed in the PT. Coruscant looks as it should, really. The big buildings where all the main players live in are nice and clean, but the backwater places like the Outrider Club and Dex's Diner are older and more run-down.

So I don't think the Star Wars look has really changed much. Take a gander at the battle of Geonosis. If that isn't the nitty-gritty of the universe, I don't know what is.

It's the arena battle scene now and the battle droids look great, their paint jobs are a little chipped on the corners, etc. I guess that it was just a general impression from Kamino and my memories of Naboo's scenes.

Nubian ships often compromise utility for beauty, in any case, so Naboo is something of an anomaly.

Kamino was clean because they want to keep a controlled environment for the clones as they are raised. Star Wars Locations explains this, and that it's why Obi wan was inside a sealed tube while viewing the clones.

Naboo is supposed to be a planet of human artisans, and they come off looking okay.

I thought it was because Kaminoans had a natural predisposition towards order and cleanliness?

Those are closely related enough that they probably both apply.

AoTC had a different look and feel to it due to it not being shot on film. The opening 15 minutes of TPM had such a SW "feel" and "look" to it that anyone who saw the OT in the theaters when it was released felt a wash of nostalgia seeing the new flick.
AoTC did NOT have it. And to make it obvious, after the text scrolls by and opening music's over, the view pans UP, instead of down and to the left as in ALL the previous movies. That bugged me, it was like seeing a new behaviour in an old friend. :?

Well, there was a huge twist in how things were progressing in AOTC...
