Headaches
Why do we get them, and why do I get chronic migraines/cluster headaches?

Re: Headaches
Most headaches seem to be caused by worrying. In my experience, worrying is a useless practice in which too many of us become indulged, for it solves nothing. I read the following book years ago, and it helped me immensely:verilon wrote:Why do we get them, and why do I get chronic migraines/cluster headaches?

[url=http://www.westegg.com/unmaintained/car ... worry.html]How to Stop Worrying and Start Living[/ur] by Dale Carnegie. In his book, Dale pointed out the link between headaches and even stomach problems and worrying. I rarely get headaches anymore, with the exception of sinus headaches, but sinus pills take care of those. Dale looked at things from a Christian perspective, but one need not be a Christian in order to apply most of the principles for eliminating worry that he lists.
One of the most useful pieces of advice I saw was the following:
Dale Carnegie wrote: 1. If you want to avoid worry, do what Sir William Osler did: Live in "day-tight compartments." Don't stew about the future. Just live each day until bedtime.
2. The next time Trouble--with a Capital T--backs you up in a corner, try the magic formula of Willis H. Carrier:3. Remind yourself of the exorbitant price you can pay for worry in terms of your health. "Those who do not know how to fight worry die young."
- 1. Ask yourself, "What is the worst that can possibly happen if I can't solve my problem?
2. Prepare yourself mentally to accept the worst--if necessary.
3. Then calmly try to improve upon the worst--which you have already mentally agreed to accept.

This is very sound advice, and I have found that sort of approach quite salutory.jegs2 wrote: One of the most useful pieces of advice I saw was the following:

The only kind of headaches I get are when I have not had my morning tea or soda. Ive been cutting down on the amount of soda I drink so this doesnt happen so much anymore.
However, I suffer from what I call TMC SYNDROME. TMC = toss my cookies
Whenever Im thrust in a brand new and stressful situation I have a lot of trouble with my tummy. Ive tried to not be such a worry wort, and Im a little better but sometimes worrying about not worrying makes it worse.
Ive found that experience is the only cure. Once Ive handled a few days of the new experience Im a-okay.

Migraines are caused by the veins in your brain constricting, swelling, and then opening in a floodgate.Rye wrote:I heard once it's because of enlarged blood vessels in your brain because there's lots of blood flowing through them...dunno how true that is though.
The constricting causes the dizziness and "floaters" in front of your eyes.
The swelling starts the headache, and makes you sensitive to light/sound/movement/etc.
The release of the veins causes the pounding/aching/OMG-it-hurts!
At least, that's how my doctor explained it, and why the first medications I take for my migraines is a blood thinner. The second is LorTab.

Re: Headaches
The only problem with this being that I don't worry too much. Or I don't think I do, at least. And when I DO get headaches, they can be set off by something as small as an untreated sinus headache (thus turning into a migraine). The Duchess of Zeon wrote:This is very sound advice, and I have found that sort of approach quite salutory.jegs2 wrote: One of the most useful pieces of advice I saw was the following:

incense, unfortunately, requires cash. With which I am severely deprived. And besides, migraines (as I have had them) can be set off by a lot of things. Sometimes even too much or too little sleep (the latter not being quite as much the case.. more being CAUSED by the migraines) can set off migraines. Or using the computer too long. Or reverb from a different room from the one I am in.innerbrat wrote:Your head hurst because you use it too much, Ver. *hugs* turn the lights out, put some incense on (if you're not asthmatic) and get some more sleep.

When I have an headache, I usually drink a coffe or two and then take a hour long walk outside, and it generally ends.
I dunno, it might be worth trying.

And has far to many risks and sideffects to be taken lightly. Allergies aside, paracetamol or asprin would be better for a headache.SyntaxVorlon wrote:At any rate, it's called Ibeprophen, or perhaps Ibeprofin, it's Advil but generic because advil is too old a recipe to keep locked up, so go out and get some of that and you'll be fine.

Well.. ibuprofen = good. Acetomenaphin = good. Midrin = reeeeeeeeally good. Percoset = ok.
My favorite kinds of meds are pain killers. Why? Because they make the pain go away. [nodnod]
Anywho.. Caffeine seems to help (i.e., Excedrin Migraine), but I seem to need increasing amounts of it in order to make it go away. Tolerance to meds, maybe? As well, it takes 1600 mg of ibuprofen to make a migraine go away.
And what causes chronic headaches like that?
