True, but if it came down to "Would you watch a proper StarWars battle or a proper StarTrek battle?" I would pick the StarTrek battle any day of the week, nothing is more beautiful then a properly done StarTrek battle.

Practicality?

Post by Traceroute »

I find it amusing that the conversation on that thread turns to practicality ... Last time I checked, exterior appearance isn't really the best way to tell if a vessel designed for no air resistance is practical.

Even if a ship looks unwieldy, it doesn't really matter as long as it can mutilate your flagship in one shot, right? ;)

The question is which design is most practical. Of the choices, the Imperator class Star Destroyer earns top marks easily. Its wedge shape and comparatively large volume:surface area ratio makes it the obvious choice as to the best designed starship.

Threads like that are the reason I keep SB.com at shotgun barrel length.

Preferably even farther away, so I have some time to aim. :)

The poll is about choosing the coolest ship, not the sanest engineering project. As the entire fucking load of artists and architecture students I know keep reminding me, the two are seldom the same. I can see why a a smooth organic appearance is more attractive to the eyes than hard austenitic steel, despite knowing which material is best to construct a bridge (S. Francisco's bridge would probably look a lot more romantic if made of precious wood..)

edit: apparently, I didn't read the entire post. Despite the poll's title, he seems to think that a cool design and a functional design are the same thing.

My point exactly! Do Narn ships look neat? Sure. Are they practical? That really depends on what exactly they were designed for, which isn't discussed.

However when dealing with SB the most acurate term is moron or retard, or in extreme cases idiot.

Not anymore. Reaperman's admin too now.

And Kier owns the server and occasionally crashes it from time to time with his cup of coffee

And Johan's there just as a tribute to the SB creator.

And yes, there's an obscene B5 bias in the polls.

I fail to see why you guys feel the need to rag on Spacebattles like this at every opportunity. So we've got alot of Fivers over at SB. Big fuckin' whoop. Why should you even care?

1. Many of our members also frequent SB.com.
2. SB.com members have sometimes made derogatory remarks towards our website. This abuse became so bad that it became the official SB.com policy that SD.net or references to SD.net could not be made.
3. Most people agree that many people on SB.com are not particularly intelligent. For example, right at this moment I am "debating" someone who believes that "Q Who" demonstrates teraton level torpedo firepower. He requires no proof of this, other than his own convictions, and refuses to quantify his mysterious evidence.
4. SB.com is filled with people who have interests that are similar to our own. Just as Cal Berkeley is looked down upon by Stanford students, SB.com is looked down by us.
5. It's fun to pick on people who are weaker than us.

Now, certainly not everyone at SB.com is an illiterate savage. Many of them--perhaps even most of them--are very intelligent, but for whatever reason SB.com has become an enviromnent in which people can make stupid statements without significant fear of retribution. People make statements over there that, if made here, would see the poster hounded mercilessly by veteran debaters until they admitted defeat and error. At SB.com, that has sadly become an all-too-common feature of debating. In spite of many excellent posters, the quality of debates at SB.com is simply not as high as it is here, at least in regards to vs. debating.

Talk about having a stuck up attitude. Get the silver spoon out of your ass MOO.
5. It's fun to pick on people who are weaker than us.
Yeah, so much better to piss them off with your attitudes like this rather then try to educate them and turn them into allies.
Now, certainly not everyone at SB.com is an illiterate savage. Many of them--perhaps even most of them--are very intelligent, but for whatever reason SB.com has become an enviromnent in which people can make stupid statements without significant fear of retribution.
And what kind of retribution would that be yes? Ban them? So we should ban SB members because they make stupid statements in the VS forum? Brilliant move there sherlock. Stereotype them from a single incident and refuse their entry permanently.
People make statements over there that, if made here, would see the poster hounded mercilessly by veteran debaters until they admitted defeat and error. At SB.com, that has sadly become an all-too-common feature of debating. In spite of many excellent posters, the quality of debates at SB.com is simply not as high as it is here, at least in regards to vs. debating.
You know, most of the veteran VS debaters at SB have simply grown bored and don't frequent the threads. When alerted some of us make an effort, then again some just don't care about the idiots and ignore them while they have their own debate in the very same thread. Just because these people can voice their opinion doesn't mean many people agree with them or that they win any debates.

And look at the quality of debates here... TA canon debates turning into flame wars with Shep and Dark Hellion, constant Trek threads where people think a single Z-95 can tear through fleets of Trek ships, or the fact that ICS has made ST vs SW flat out borring. Yes, real high quality over here.
