Legendary, ear-collecting CIA officer dies

BANGKOK, Thailand, July 7 (UPI) -- Anthony A. Poshepny, a decorated, former CIA official who was famous for collecting enemy ears in Southeast Asia, has died. He was 78.

Known as "Tony Poe," Poshepny was also famous for dropping decapitated human heads from the air onto communist troops and for sticking heads on spikes, during various failed secret wars in Indonesia, Tibet and Laos. His tactics sometimes earned the wrath of U.S. embassy employees who received bags full of human ears, according to the New Zealand news Web site Scoop.co.nz

He twice won a CIA Star -- the CIA's highest award -- from CIA directors in 1959 and in 1975, upon his retirement.

"He successfully fought terror with terror. He strove to instill courage and respect in the tribal forces that he recruited as well as fear in the enemy," said friend and author Philip Smith.
