I think the revulsion comes from the fact that while the only part of those relationships you see are the children, in this story he tells the entire damn tale, and he tells it in a way that starts off as normal, so you start seeing yourself in it. Then it takes a plunge, and you STILL see yourself in it. And then you puke.
