clash of armies...

General Thade's Army from Planet of the Apes runs head long into Maximus and an entrenched Roman Army. Who's the winner?

The real Maximus and his army, or the Maximus of Gladiator fame and his army?

The Maximus of Gladiator fame. Sorry, should have been more specific.

Roman army(first century AD i assume, not seen the film) versus primative apes?

Roman Army: Entrenched with a phalanx formation to stop any projectile weapons the apes bring with them, the spearsmen and archers would reduce the apes down the zoo inhabitant sizes. Lets face it, standard Roman tactics ruled.

Hmmm. I thought it would have been a little closer. If the apes could weather the storm of Roman Arrows and long range weapons, get close in for hand to hand combat, their strength and speed would come into play more directly. The Roman archers would have been the key to the battle I thought. The more apes they cut down at long range, the less apes there were to chew up infantry.

Would the apes have had cavalry? They did ride around on horses in the movie from time to time, so it's not completely inconcievable that they had a cavalry unit somewhere.

But then again, General Thade's almost complete ignorance of the concept of combined arms might cripple the apes' chances in the long run...

The arhcer would be a key piece in the battle; however, even without the archers, the apes would fall to the Roman Army. The phalanx formation helps neutrilizes the apes ability to get into the inner ranks. While held back, spearmen can spear the apes from behind the protective wall. The apes don't seem to have enough inteligence to be able to figure out flanking the Romans position, though such a move may have lead to no advantage pending the kind of entrenchment one places the Romans in.
