and much to my surprise, Im finding them persuasive.

I am interested in improving my physique, leadership ability, and bank account, and being in the reserve can improve all three.

Don't join the Marines, unless you plan on carrer.
If you join for 4 years, and don't like it, it will be 4 years of hell.
If you join the marines and like it, but do not go career, you will regret/miss it forever.
You will hate it, or love it. The emphasis on unit cohesion, and bonding, will alienate you from the corps, or make you a part of something you don't want to live without, and miss forever if you leave.
Hmmmmmm.

Be careful what you're getting yourself into. Remember, even in the reserves there's a good chance you'll be called for combat duty. It's a part of the job and don't let them tell you otherwise.

Think about it long and hard before you decide anything. Hell, talk to some of the Marines we have on the board here. They'd probably be willing to talk and they'll be able to tell you what it's really like.

Give every service the chance the explain what they can offer. My experience is that Marine recruiters "tend" to be the most honest about what they can offer. But be warned, Reservists often get treated like 2nd class citizens when compared to the regulars. Reserve units are often run by active duty personel. Just like any job, you can get a shitty boss/unit that will make you hate it. Or you could end up with a bunch of great guys and love it.

Reserve duty can really bite you in the ass as an adult if you get called up. Reservists in my area can actually lose their homes if their companies dont help out. Enlisted pay simply cant pay for a home. Something to think about.

Of course, if you made a career out of being a reservist you always have the option to volunteer for active duty for 90 days if you find yourself inbetween jobs. I know a someone that got laid off, then asked to be part of the Homeland Defense call ups. So at least they are working full time for a year.

Semper Fi!

But don't become a Combat Engineer. You'd be the one going into the minefield *first*

i still say to into the airforce. there you can be pretty much anything you want like you would in the rest of the employment world, but you get military benefits. plus you get a snazzy uniform and can pull rank when you get up there. :)

Screw the Marines. Go Navy. Be a SEAL if you want it tough. But anything's better than the bullet-sponges!

And being a Squid is much better than a Jarhead. At least it's an animal! :D

please tell me you are joking about the Marines improving your bank account, military pay is awfully low even with recent pay increases and reservists get paid even less because they are not full time. Of all the reasons to join the Marines, money is not one of them, no matter what the recruiter tells you.

Green Berets > SEALs > Marine Recon...go Army! And well I don't know about the realistic chances of special forces. I'm still stuck between West Point or Physics, choices choices.
