As a note, I find the debate that MOO refers to to be singularly stupid and lame and the sort that gives anyone who even thinks about supporting ST a bad name.
I was never a big supporter of ST to begin with, and even before ICS figures came out would have conceeded that in a straight-up fight the Alpha Quad would have been sorely massacred. Being a more or less peaceful democracy (save the blip of the Dominion war) up against a much larger fascist power would tend to do that. But at least back then you could have interesting what if scenarios. Now it's just pointless, and anyone who debates ST vs SW is basically trolling to piss off the other side or setting up some pretty biased and/or silly scenarios.

Wait a sec..... I've yet to see ANYONE make the z-95 argument (and hope I never do) and he was just saying, in great length, that SB is rampant with fanatic fans with little idea what they're talking about. Most debates are atleast ok here. SB, not from what I've seen (Note: I said most.).Alyeska wrote:And SD.net has not done this in return?Master of Ossus wrote:2. And so a single example sets the tone for the entire site?3. Most people agree that many people on SB.com are not particularly intelligent. For example, right at this moment I am "debating" someone who believes that "Q Who" demonstrates teraton level torpedo firepower. He requires no proof of this, other than his own convictions, and refuses to quantify his mysterious evidence.
Talk about having a stuck up attitude. Get the silver spoon out of your ass MOO.4. SB.com is filled with people who have interests that are similar to our own. Just as Cal Berkeley is looked down upon by Stanford students, SB.com is looked down by us.
Yeah, so much better to piss them off with your attitudes like this rather then try to educate them and turn them into allies.5. It's fun to pick on people who are weaker than us.
And what kind of retribution would that be yes? Ban them? So we should ban SB members because they make stupid statements in the VS forum? Brilliant move there sherlock. Stereotype them from a single incident and refuse their entry permanently. Now, certainly not everyone at SB.com is an illiterate savage. Many of them--perhaps even most of them--are very intelligent, but for whatever reason SB.com has become an enviromnent in which people can make stupid statements without significant fear of retribution.
You know, most of the veteran VS debaters at SB have simply grown bored and don't frequent the threads. When alerted some of us make an effort, then again some just don't care about the idiots and ignore them while they have their own debate in the very same thread. Just because these people can voice their opinion doesn't mean many people agree with them or that they win any debates.People make statements over there that, if made here, would see the poster hounded mercilessly by veteran debaters until they admitted defeat and error. At SB.com, that has sadly become an all-too-common feature of debating. In spite of many excellent posters, the quality of debates at SB.com is simply not as high as it is here, at least in regards to vs. debating.
And look at the quality of debates here... TA canon debates turning into flame wars with Shep and Dark Hellion, constant Trek threads where people think a single Z-95 can tear through fleets of Trek ships, or the fact that ICS has made ST vs SW flat out borring. Yes, real high quality over here.

Of course we have, what's your point?Alyeska wrote:And SD.net has not done this in return?Master of Ossus wrote:2. SB.com members have sometimes made derogatory remarks towards our website. Not a single example. SB.com allows people like Echelon, rvalencia, Galaxy, and DarkStar to make posts on MANY different subjects without fear of repercussion. Why aren't they on SD.net? They got chased away because they refuse to debate rationally. It's REPRESENTATIVE of some of the trolls that frequent SB.com.And so a single example sets the tone for the entire site?3. Why? I'm over there right now getting trying to get Elizar to admit that the Centauri don't have TENS OF THOUSANDS of ships. He started the debate by saying that through his interpretation of the series the Centauri of B5 could sack half of their entire fleet and still have defeated the ENTIRE ISA, including the Minbari.Talk about having a stuck up attitude. Moreover, as you well know, attitude is irrelevant.
I don't want morons like DarkStar, Galaxy, or echelon as my "allies." Not only do they provide no service due to their rampant stupidity, but they run the risk of alienating vastly more people by simply trolling.Yeah, so much better to piss them off with your attitudes like this rather then try to educate them and turn them into allies.5. You know perfectly well that's not what I'm advocating. I feel it is up to the board itself to deal with trolls like this with merciless flaming and by holding them to the rules of rational debates until they show that they're no longer going to troll and make idiotic comments without hesitation. And what kind of retribution would that be yes? Ban them? So we should ban SB members because they make stupid statements in the VS forum? Brilliant move there sherlock. So? Isn't it a matter of board pride that you remove trollish members from your ranks? Are you suggesting that SB.com has the number of trolls that it does only because other members have gotten "bored?" If so, where are the veteran debaters? Have they abandoned the site? Have they moved on to other things? Are they simply leaving the boards at SB.com to the trolls to "move across the sea?"You know, most of the veteran VS debaters at SB have simply grown bored and don't frequent the threads. When alerted some of us make an effort, then again some just don't care about the idiots and ignore them while they have their own debate in the very same thread. 1. There are not nearly as many trolls at SD.net as there are on SB.com.And look at the quality of debates here... TA canon debates turning into flame wars with Shep and Dark Hellion, constant Trek threads where people think a single Z-95 can tear through fleets of Trek ships, or the fact that ICS has made ST vs SW flat out borring. Yes, real high quality over here.
2. Shep and Dark Hellion are a single example. Earlier you told me off for using a single example against SB.com, even though it was REPRESENTATIVE of the trolling problem, yet here you admit that this is a single example.
3. I have not seen a starfighter (Z-95) vs. Trek ship debate in weeks. You know this. You also know that most of the veteran debaters here squashed people who felt that starfighters could wade through fleets of starships.
ICS may have made ST v. SW boring, but that has nothing to do with the level of discussion.
