Nobody in Nigeria cares, and no one outside of Nigeria has jurisdiction?

Presumably, in the time between when the check is deposited and when the check bounces, they ask for bank account numbers and whatnot so they can "transfer money more easily" or "so we don't waste valuable time and take unnecessary risks sending personal checks on transatlantic flights". The odds are pretty good that most people will trust someone who just sent them a check for $80,000. By the time the bank says the check is phony, it's too late: your life savings are somewhere in Lagos,

I don't think you can chalk up people falling for this on lazyness. This is a product of plain stupidity. Who in their right mind would give someone from another country (who is immune to US laws) their personal banking information? Answer: dumbasses.

I e-mailed one of these guys back after getting one of these e-mails and told them that I would be happy to open a separate deposit-only bank account in order to get this deal going because my bank would do it for free. They actually e-mailed back and said that they would do that, but it would take too much time. I wanted to keep the exchange going, but I get bored easily. I'll see if I can find that e-mail.

Yes I'm sure the mighty Nigerian government will take quick action, the same government that gave us the cement ship fiasco and the conference center that sank at the rate of two feet.

I should dig up my e-mail exchange with a Nigerian scammer, the one where I pretended to be some crimelord on the run from the FBI.

Oddly enough, after I told him that I was coming to Nigeria in a helicopter to pick him up, he never responded.

I read an article in one of those Brittanica world update thingies around 1995 or so. It's basically a poured concrete hull, but the concrete usually has some other stuff in it to prevent it from shattering.

Sounds crazy, I know, but they actually do float.

I've seen a few cement ships. One was a motor yacht, the others barges. None were spectacular, but they all worked.

No cement ships, as in ships, which haul cement. Many nations can't produce their own and its a big industry moving it around the world.

In 1973 Nigeria had a major cement shortage, as did most of the world. So for 1974 the government had a great idea, and ordered ten times more cement then it needed, expecting that most contractors would be unable to deliver leaving them with exactly what they needed.

Well production ramped up and they all met there contracts, the result along with vast amounts of fraud, one Greek shipping company created a counterfeit contract for its self and showed up with a bunch of rusting WW2 freighters loaded with cement rejected by another country. The end result was over 250 ships laden with cement piling up off Lagos. An additional 150 vessels hauling other stuff where also grid locked with them. However the port could only unload about ten ships at once and Nigeria couldn't pay for nor did it need all the cement. However by the terms of the contracts it had to pay for the ships every minute they waited to unload.

The government response was to ignore the fleet of cement ships hoping they would simply leave. Didn't work. So they banned to sale of food and water to anchored vessels, hoping they'd have to leave to reposition and wouldn't return. That also didn't work. So the whole thing dragged on for time, meanwhile the topical heat was causing water to condense in the ships holds, ruining much of the cement.

Eventually after around eight months in 1975 Nigeria settled the matter and agreed to pay for the fiasco. In the end more then 90% of the cement was dumped at sea, though it took months to chip it out of some ships cargo holds and a number of vessels got scrapped rather then bother.

Wonderful country.

Wow. First Nigeria, and then Canada a little while ago. What country will have the shit beaten out of it by private shipping next?
