Problems problems concerning the weight, yes.

But them being efficient conductors of heat? Uhm, the entire reason Columbia
broke up wasn't because of extreme heat, but because there was a damaged
tile allowing the gasses entry into the interior wing.

They have several emergancy landing locations around the world for differant stages of lift-off. If you would want to return to launch site, you need to do right after lauch, otherwise you would need to go to another landing site.

As for fixing the Columbia. The external tank on the Columbia was a new "enviornmentally friendly" version that had been in use for several years. Foam had broken off of them before, but never like the Columbia. They need to go back to useing the old style external tanks.
