Troops in Iraq get snowplows, lawn mowers

COPENHAGEN — Danish troops in Iraq, who have groaned about vehicles with no air conditioning in the sweltering heat of the desert and about bulletproof vests in wrong sizes, were astonished to find snowplows, lawn mowers and even salt for icy roads in a supply shipment.
The 380-soldier contingent stationed in southern Iraq also complained of not receiving stakes for tents nor morphine for the medical service, said a report in the Ekstra Bladet tabloid.

And the current government of Denmark wonder why people are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with them.....

Well, actually, it does snow in northern Iraq, so if they're being transferred into the Kurdish regions it might make some sense.

Maybe peacekeeping troops will need to be in Iraq for years. I mean, they haven't created order from chaos yet in Afghanistan IIRC.

Well, of course, but the situation is such that you should be sending in supplies that are needed NOW to help stabilize the country. MacArthur in Japan asked for bread or for bullets--he got bread and the peace held. They didn't send him snowplows instead of either one, however.

I can't really say I'm surprised. Our military is sad at best. The problem is our politicians haven't noticed yet. So we end up being the country that wants to, but can't. The only thing we have that might be up to date is our airforce. they're still flying F-16, but at least they managed to keep up with F-16 upgrades.

I don't know....snow plows might be useful in pushing fallen debris out of the streets of Baghdad, I guess.

You'd rather have a tax hike??

(As if the danish government didn't have enough trouble fulfilling empty promises from the election campaign)

Nah. I think we've had enough of those (tax hikes, that is). I just want our government to take a good realistic look at what hardware we've got and realize that Denmark is not the great military power that will bring peace to the entire world.

Sure they need peacekeepers in Iraq, but our government could at least have checked to see if our forces even were equipped for a desert campaign. Obviously it would appear that we should just stick to operations in areas with temperate clima. Deserts are definately not our specialty.

What about the "United European Army" the EU bigwigs have been talking about?

It's that, or getting branded traitors. We only participated in the war in order to show respect for the USA, not to help them.

I kind of like the idea. If it's a professional army, that is. Not that we're going to participate in that anyway.

Yep. Can't argue with that. I just wish they were a little less embarrasing while they were in the field. I mean, missing aircondition and wrong size vests happen. But snowplows? In the desert? That's just sad for the Danish Armed Forces.

That's like... no, that's not like anything. That's institutional stupidity on a level I've never even heard of before. Did they at least issue their soldiers guns, or are Danish military personnel going into combat with locked and loaded Weed-Whackers?

Wait, it just occurred to me -- Iraq is just their staging area! Oh, no! The Danish are about to invade Minnesota!

Possibly, maybe they can sell it?

This reminds me the Allhegeny Uprising Module for Twilight 2000. The military sent a shipment of Artic parkas to Puerto Rico.
