Sorry, it was a poor attempt at humour.

I decided to measure time in an unknown quantity and said it would take 4 of them to drill 20 km into the crust.

The greatest depth ever drilled was 12 kilometers on the Kola peninsula and it took the Russians a decade to do it using specially built pipes and equipment. The equipment we have today wont go any further, the pipes simply snap.

I swear, I once found an evangelical Christian site that claimed that the Russians dug so deep at Kola they accidentally drilled into Hell. They even provided "proof" in the form of a sound file of people moaning and screaming, supposedly taken from the drill site.

Yeah I just googled it and came up with all sort osfshit. Heres one really funny note off www.truthorfiction.com
The plot thickened when a Norwegian school teacher named Age Rendalen decided to embellish the story with the description of the bat-like creature coming out of the hole. He did it purposely to see whether a religious television program would accept the story at face value without checking it out, and they did. TruthOrFiction.com has first-hand information from Mr. Rendalen.

That story is no sillier than seeing God in a stain on a rag (oops, I mean "heavenly image on a shroud").

And lets not forget people seeing the Virgin Mary....or was it just an oddly shaped fence post on a French cliff side...(I think it was in France anyway)

Hmm i remember something called "projecy moho" in which the US were gonna try and drill through the ocean floor to the magma.

But that was the cover story, they did it to retrieve a downed soviet sub.

There was Project Jennifer. That was the cover story for Glomar Explorers mission to raise a sunken Golf II off the bottom of the pacific. Basically the ship was suppose to mine manganese ore nodules that carpet the seabed in many areas via a large suction dredge. Later after the while thing was blown to the press and the sub had been partly retrieved she actually did so for a year.

However in the late 1990's an oil company leased and modified her to carry a deep ocean oil drilling rig.
