It sounds like a breeding ground for rabid unions and socialistsThe Duchess of Zeon wrote: Registering to a particular party allows part of your income tax to be diverted to that party's fundraising coffers, and also, as mentioned, lets you vote in the primaries if they are not open (which is the case in most southern states, a legacy of reconstruction). This can all be avoided by registering as "nonparty" or "independent" of course--the former used when there's an "independent party" in the state, a few states may have it.
So, yes, your party affiliation is known--if you register to a particular party I suspect you'd get mailings and the like from them--but in the U.S. that doesn't stop you from voting for whomever you like (except, again, in the primaries in some states, but those aren't open elections anyway)--it's just a statement of affiliation. A registered Democrat can easily vote for a Republican candidate and nobody would find out; the actual voting procedure is still secret.
Just registered to vote :)

Yep, I just got registered to vote too, in Palm Beach County, affiliation Democratic Party (To those who know me IRL, yes, I know it's a contradiction).
And those counters in the last presidential election (at least in Florida), were all Right-Wing nuts who made total fools out of my poor County, our state, and our entire damn country. Gore won that last election by half a million votes, and they found this out half an hour after the deadline imposed by Katherine Harris.

I should just have a macro or something so I don't have to keep typing this: Gore LOST the electoral vote, so it doesn't matter worth a shit if he won the popular vote. He never won the election--and the Miami Herald's own recount found that Bush still would have won had the recounts continued. The half a million extra votes Gore had in the rest of the country were worthless--he needed 600 more in Florida and he didn't have them. Thank the Democratic party for running the one man in the entire country who couldn't beat a blithering idiot like George W. Bush.Vorlon1701 wrote:Yep, I just got registered to vote too, in Palm Beach County, affiliation Democratic Party (To those who know me IRL, yes, I know it's a contradiction).

One thing that, unfortunately, is almost never addressed when talking about the election, is the thousands of black people denied their voting rights, most of which would have voted for Gore. Thousands of black democrats were falsly identified as felons. Choicepoint, the texan(?) company that screwed the voters, has ties to the republican party. BIG SURPRISE
Bush's supposed lead would have been shredded if these people would have been allowed to vote.

It seems as though conservatives weren't satisfied with disrupting vote counts and other such shenanigans. Now, a GOP-doner company has implemented code in voting machines that favors republican candidates (which led to 3 texan republican candidates getting the exact same number of votes in an election). I saw a thread on it here before, months and months ago. I might make a new thread on it.

I've been in Tennessee, it's chock full of people that would beat you up if you didn't look like a hick.

Almost certainly. It's also a fact that most right wingers are not racist, despite certain leftists constant accusations and insinuations that that is indeed the case. Gore didn't lose his home state because the voters there are racist, he lost his home state because they weren't buying what he had to sell--higher taxes, rampant environmentalism, class warfare fearmongering, and four more years of Clinton slime. The only reason he came as close as he did was because he was running against George W. Bush.Hamel wrote:Why did that get your goat? Is it not a fact that most racists are rightwing?

I'm sure the rampant racism among the voters there had NOTHING to do with it. *glares* what is wrong with being a socialist? Well, congratulatins, Kojikun, and may our nation always and forever decide by ballot rather than bullet.
That said, Hamel, geez man, do you think there are no Left Wing racists? Theer are, you know. People who hate Whites, and a lot of Leftists these days are down on Jews because we tend to be rich and successful (I have yet to see it myself, but....) and because Israel "oppresses" the Palestinians.
Extremist hatred exists on both sides of the coin, no sides hands are clean. I cannot begin to count how many times everything that is evil in America (or the world) has been blamed on "white men".

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Sure, there are some left wing racists, but they are not large in number. Even the "kill whiteys" in the black population tend to be socially conservative. That said, Hamel, geez man, do you think there are no Left Wing racists? Theer are, you know. But hey, point out how most communists were leftists and I'd heartilly agree

So when do we see the proof that massive racism, as opposed to general social and fiscal conservatism among the vast majority of the voters, cost Al Gore Tennessee and the rest of the South?Hamel wrote:I'm sure the rampant racism among the voters there had NOTHING to do with it.
