Some questions...

Post by Emperor Palpatine »

Just two questions:

1) How did the Imperial Walkers (ATAT) get onto Hoth?

If I'm correct, the Rebel's ships were only able to leave when the planetary shields were lowered. However, before the lowering, the Imperials were already on the planet! How did they get through the shields? Surely the shields would have prevented the Imperials' entrance when they were up. Otherwise, wouldn't it be useless if it could only withstand weapons fire?

Comments and thoughts?

2) Were officers awarded with medals in the Imperial Navy? So far, we do not see any evidence of medals or other things awarded for their good work. Any sources (other than the movies') showing such awards existing? Or were the only awards simply promotions?

IIRC The shield on Hoth was not a full planetary shield, just a theatre shiled. It was much like an umbrella. So the Empire landed the AT-AT's outside the shield radius and they travelled on land and passed under it.

As for question 2 I have no idea.

So, these shields were much like the ones used by the Gungans in EP1?

The shield only protected "an area of the sixth planet of the Hoth system." The walkers landed outside of the shields and marched in, just as the battle droids were able to march through the Gungan shield in TPM.

WEG makes reference to some medals, and some official sources credit various officers with having received medals, but the most explicit use of decorations no doubt come from the X-Wing and TIE Fighter video games, in which medals are frequently given to capable fliers.

If you accept the video games, you can get frequent medals in TF and XWvTF.

Well look at me, don't I just feel special.
It's been atleast a year since I've played it though.

Ah, I've just watched ESB and finally (!) caught Vader saying "Move our ships beyond the energy field, and deploy the fleet" or something like that... I always (almost) find answers to my questions shortly after I have asked. Sometimes I'm just too hasty and eager to ask questions. :)

Hmm... the movies never show any medals on anyone, and the uniform didn't seem to be fit to 'attach' medals...

The Emperor doesn't award you with a medal, but if you do all the Secret Missions, you can advance up the Secret Order- ending up as Emperor's Voice.

From the sounds of it, I don't think you got that far.

Well, there was some great big ceremony and the Emporer gave me something, looked like a medal :?

The Emperor does not debase himself by actually walking up to you and giving you a medal- his lackey gives you a medal though- while he watches from several 100m up.

Ok, from what I remember he was sitting on some throne type thing and he spoke and he had a medal type thing in his hand.

You're referring to the Emperor's Will Medal, obtained by stopping Zaarin's coup attempt. That's a one time deal, I think.

The Imperial Navy probably doesn't bother with requiring its soldiers to wear the gaudy medals they are awarded, except for maybe special cerimonial instances.

That's something I always found cool about the Imperial officers. Their uniforms aren't covered in gaudy rank badges and medals. Their rank badges are simplistic and oh-so-cool.

The Zaarin coup is mentioned in the New EGtC. COOLNESS!

I used to have both those games (Tie FIghter and X-Wing), but they disappeared soemwhere (i have the boxes, manuals, and everything else, but no games DAMNIT!!!). I've been looking to buy them again, but don't want to pay $25.00 each for the games (official Lucasarts price). Anyone know of a place to get them (legal or otherwise)?

Yeah, I like this fact too. The uniforms and such that I've seen on Earth seem quite messy, with those rank insignias and badges placed in a place that would have to make a person look closer to identify the rank.
SW's rank insignias are staring right in a person's face, and is so simple to guess what rank they are. And clean, too.

Oh, speaking of Zaarin, he appears to be in X-Wing Alliance. His insignia is one of an Admiral, but instead of just one cylinder, he had two, one on either side. And the 'Lieutenant' in the scene where Admiral Holtz's ship failed to jump into hyperspace had a 5-columned, full red insignia, also with one cylinder on either side.
Can these insignias actually fit into the system? If not... which ranks do the insignias really represent?

Call me crazy, but I'm quite interested in all this rank and insignia business. *waits for smirks and snide remarks*
